What Great Teachers Do Differently- 17 Things That Matter Most Todd Whitaker
7. Who is the variable?
If the best teacher in the school gives a quiz and the students do poorly on it whom does she blame? The predicable answer: Herself.
Now, if the worst teacher in a school gives a quiz and the kids do poorly on it, whom does he blame? Predicable answers: The kids, the parents, administration, or last year’s teachers or….
Whose behavior can a teacher actually control in his classroom? HIS OWN.
What is the variable here? Not the students doing poorly on the assignment. The variable is how the teachers respond. Good teachers consistently strive to improve, and they focus on something they can control– their own performance. Other teachers wait for something else to change. Great teachers look to themselves for answers; poor teachers look elsewhere. As we know, they can wait a very long time for anything else to happen to make a difference.
Clearly the best teachers accept responsibility for their classrooms and the worst teachers do not. I do a great deal of work in classroom management. When I talk to teachers about behavior issues, whose behavior do you think I talk about? The teacher’s of course. Otherwise, it’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed and defeated. When we center on our own behavior, we feel empowered to make a difference.
At all levels of our school systems, the effective teachers take responsibility. Some superintendents blame the school board for their woes; others work to educate its members. Some teachers lament, “This is the worst group of students I’ve ever had!” Others rise to the challenge of making every class their best. If everyone looks in the mirror when they ask, “Who is the variable?” we will have made tremendous strides toward school improvement. After all, we are the one variable that we can easily and most productively influence.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

R.E.D.Day
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) joins the Department of Defense, the DoDEA and
the military community in celebrating November as Military Family Appreciation Month. We know behind our brave service men and women are our military-children who are serving each day right alongside their loved ones. Through deployments, reintegration and frequent relocations, our military families are essential to protecting our nation’s freedom.
This year, everyone throughout VBCPS is invited to participate in R.E.D. Day - Remember Everyone Deployed- by wearing red Thursday, Nov. 9. By wearing red on Nov. 9, VBCPS will demonstrate their support for military families and their active duty loved ones and spread a message of recognition and appreciation for their service not just during Military Family Appreciation Month, but every day of the year.
