Assistant Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
I had a fantastic opportunity to attend a conference last week regarding the positive behavior program we use at Oak Hills. Some of the best sessions I attended talked about a topic near and dear to us: social/emotional learning or SEL. Our staff members continue to receive training in how to embed the teaching of SEL into their daily lessons. These might include things like how to have a conversation with a peer or how to make and keep a friend. Some of the strategies and techniques I learned will become an invaluable part of how we improve our work with kids.
One of the things I wanted to pass along was a great resource I came across for talking with your student about SEL topics. The website is www.parenttoolkit.com. It has great articles, videos and conversation starters about all kinds of topics from academics to financial literacy. If you click on the menu and scroll to topics, you will see Social & Emotional. You can filter by grade level and subject. I encourage you to take a moment to explore the website, especially the conversation starters. These are just quick easy ways to get information about your child's day, while teaching them about Social and Emotional Wellness.
We look forward to seeing you all at conferences on March 7th & 8th. Please remember conferences are not student led. Since report cards only go home twice a year now, the district feels it is important to set aside this time for you to communicate openly with your child's teacher. We know we talk differently about our students when they are present, so please strive to come without your child. Our teachers have prepared to share your student's progress with you, and we can't wait to welcome you to the school. See you next week!
Warm regards,
Jennifer DeMartino
Spring Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences are fast approaching and we are using the online scheduler again this year. As a reminder, the official dates for conferences are below:
March 7, 3:30PM -7:30PM
March 8, 7:30AM -7:30PM (No School for Students)
March 9 (No School for Students)
To schedule your conference please click on the following link:
https://ptcfast.com/schools/OakHills_Elementary_School
Please follow the steps outlined on the website. If you are having issues with the website, contact your child’s teacher. Unfortunately, our schedule does not allow us to hold separate conferences for divorced or separated families. Please contact the office if there is a court order that mandates an exception to this policy. We look forward to seeing all families at these important meetings. Conferences provide an important opportunity for you to understand how your student is dong both academically and socially. We ask you do not bring your child to your meeting so you can have an honest conversation with your child’s teacher.
Volunteer Background Check Reminders
Just a reminder about which events need background checks this year. Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to keep our students safe. Don't forget to sign in at the computer each time you volunteer, even if it's just for a few minutes!
Field Day and 5th Grade Send Off:
Background checks are required for volunteers. Spectators with no background checks will be asked to stay in a designated area only. Background checks will not be required for lunch with your student. Siblings can attend if you are not volunteering.
Field Trips:
Background checks are required.
Parent meetings and evening events:
No background checks are required. Siblings may attend.
I hope this clarifies things and thank you for your support. We love having you at our school, and we hope you will continue to volunteer at Oak Hills.
Read Across America Day
Career Fair Volunteers Still Needed
Oak Hills will kick off its first annual Career Fair on April 10th from 8:15-10:30! This will be a great opportunity to highlight some amazing careers that our students might like to pursue after school! We are looking for presenters to give 10 minute presentations about the jobs they do. Students would rotate to your station, you'd give a 10 minute presentation and then another group of students would rotate to you. You'd give the presentation approximately 8 times.
Some of the questions that we'd love to have addressed during the presentation are:
- What do you ?
- What did you have to do to prepare for a job in that field?
- How has the shift in technology impacted your job?
- How do you impact the global workforce?
- How do you impact the community?
- Who are the key players you collaborate with in your field?
- How is your job interconnected with other jobs?
If you feel like you could participate in this informative day and help prepare our students for college and career readiness, please email Jennifer at jennifer_demartino@beaverton.k12.or.us!
Thanks,
Jennifer
Local Option Levy
School Board Passes Resolution to Authorize Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a five-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election. If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year. In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton’s elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools.
For more information, please contact the Communications & Community Involvement Department at 503-356-4360.
