Rain Gardens
by Margaret W.
What are rain gardens?
Rain gardens are gardens made of native shrubs, flowers and perennials used to absorb leftover rainwater from things like roofs, driveways, patios, and lawns. Rain gardens allow 30% more water to soak into the ground, compared to a normal lawn. Rain gardens are pretty efficient when it comes to draining rainwater. Rain gardens are normally wet while it is raining because they can drain water in 12-48 hours.
How could installing a rain garden benefit people?
Installing a rain garden can benefit people in many ways. To start, by installing a rain garden your yard will not be flooded after a downpour for a few days. A rain garden can take up to 2 days to drain water, but, normally the process is a lot more efficient. Also, rain gardens improve groundwater quality. As the rain garden drains rainwater, it also removes pollutants. So, people drinking groundwater can have a cleaner, fresher water. Additionally, rain gardens preserve native vegetation. Rain gardens have native shrubs in them which can help preserve the plants and vegetation. And, some may find that rain gardens improve the look of your yard. For example, in front of the courthouse, downtown, there is a rain garden. In my opinion, this definitely makes the area more appealing. Rain gardens definitely catch someone's eye in a positive way. Finally, rain gardens are can be fairly inexpensive. Rain gardens cost an average of four dollars per square foot. This is because the kind of soil and plants you choose for your rain garden can have a great impact on your final price.
How could rain gardens help us now?
As you have probably noticed, we have had a very rainy week. This September has been very rainy. With rain gardens, pedestrians may not have to walk in such wet and muddy places. Also, where ever people walk in their back or front yards would be muddy, rainy and damp without rain gardens. For instance, on Wednesday the county cross country was held. Due to previous rain, the course had rain puddles all around. With a rain garden, the cross country course could have been less muddy, damp, and wet. With a rain garden, society can handle storms and rain at times like this.
Interview with Andrea Mueller, Inside Out Design
Q: Around how many people have you installed rain gardens for?
A: Around 15-20 people.
Q: What kinds of flowers or plants do you use in rain gardens?
A: Blue flag iris and rattlesnake master at the bottom, native grasses, coneflower, liatris, winterberry holly, serviceberry, sweet coneflower, buttonbush, itea and more!
Q: How do you think rain gardens help the environment?
A: They help filter pollutants from water and they also slow down the water before it goes to our watersheds by recharging groundwater supply.

The land is grey
The rain pours down
Thunder roars and throws down lightning
House lights are out
People a asleep
Cats fight
Dogs howl
Fields are struck
Fire spreads
A red glow is seem
The grey can not hide it
A rose
A red rose burns in the grey
Raindrops scattered on leaves and petals
The is a crack of thunder
The rose is flooded by grey
The sea does not overpower it
There is no chaos in the rose
The rose is a peaceful and different
Narnia: A Haiku Story
by Lucy S.
The tweet of the birds
Communicating today
Will lift my spirit
The howl of the wolves
Just about gives me a fright
But I’ll be okay
The leaves of the tree
The green ones are turning brown
Fall upon my head
I will shake them off
But they keep sticking to my
Big, glorious mane
The golden fur gets
In my face when I shake the
Faded leaves off me
Spring will soon return
When I show my face to them
The witch will soon die
I will take my place
As the true king of my home
Narnia is safe
Peter, Edmund and
Susan will fight as Lucy
Saves all of the rest
A Poem
The stars are glistening The glass of my cup is reflecting light back into the moons direction. I’m staring down at my glass of water, Enchanted by the beauty in the night long ago, The night I met him in my dreams. He was brown-Haired, His skin pale, His eyes blue, And his smile as bright as the sun, teeth whiter than the moon. He’s my support, He’s my friend, Most look at me and say, “Are you talking to yourself?” I respond with a no, i’m never alone. He is here. So now, I’m staring down at my glass of water, Enchanted by the beauty in the night long ago, The night I met him in my dreams.

New Horizons Part 5- THE FINALE
Dovah stood quickly and looked around the cramped space. The roof was far above him. The Nonan’s were way taller than the average human so they had to make buildings taller. Dovah walked up to the bars and gripped them tightly giving them a shake. It was worth a shot Dovah thought to himself. He sat back down on the bed. There was no apparent way out. Dovah looked out of the bars when the door opened. The sound reverberated across the walls. The door shut with a loud slam. The Nonan wore a police looking uniform. It leaned against the wall, flipping a coin into the air. The sound was metallic and quick each time. It flew into the air and then fell back into the Nonan’s hand. It was the only sound that filled the room.
Dovah closed his eyes and rested his hands under his chin. The Nonan’s were going to come back and question him. Maybe even through torture. He didn't know what he was going to do. He opened his eyes and looked at the guard. The Nonan seemed bored. Dovah looked at the big door. It creaked open quietly and a head peeked through. It was an intergalactic soldier from Earth. Dovah looked back at the guard.
“I’m hungry” he distracted. The guard walked over to him not seeming to understand what he was saying. Dovah went through some hand motions. The Soldier came through with a silenced pistol and shot the guard down. Dovah let out a large amount of air. The guard found the keys on the Nonan and unlocked the gate. Dovah stepped out.
“Thanks,” Dovah thanked and gave the soldier a nod. The soldier nodded and led Dovah out of the room. They slowly made their way out of the police station and into the town. No one was on the streets. Dovah was led behind the buildings into an alleyway. There was an interstellar stealth copter down the street hidden away. Dovah sprinted alongside the soldier. When all of the sudden the Nonan’s jumped into the street. The soldier shot up and the fell down. Dovah jumped in the passenger side of the helicopter and the soldier in the left. He quickly started the engine and checked everything. Dovah thought back to when he was a pilot and checked off everything and put on a helmet that was in the floor.
“Ready for takeoff,” the soldier’s low raspy voice boomed into the microphone.
“Ready,” Dovah shot back. This soldier had saved him and now he could go back home. They took off fast and soon they were out of the atmosphere and starting up the interstellar rocket engine. Soon they got back to Earth. He was safe.
Review: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
I recently read Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series and I loved it, so I decided to read her The Summer I Turned Pretty series. As much as I loved the first series the second was a complete letdown. The Summer I Turned Pretty, was the first book in the series about Belly Conklin and her struggles with love. The second book, It’s Not Summer Without You, takes place a year later and follows Belly and her first summer not in Cousins. The last book, We’ll Always Have Summer, takes place at the end of her freshman year in college and shows Belly go through another summer and a lot of drama. For me, this series was very disappointing. Belly was a messy character and she seemed to get herself into unnecessary trouble. Conrad was one of the only characters I saw actual character development in. Belly’s inability to think about others was just sad. I gave this series three stars, but I was feeling generous so it’s probably more of two and a half star average. I wouldn’t recommend this series to anyone.
Into the Dark Depths Comes Fortnite Season 6
By Jack G
With 40 million players worldwide it comes as no surprise that Fortnite: Battle Royal (Fortnite BR) has a big fandom. Over the past year, players around the world have been enjoying the exciting events from Fortnite. These events include the meteorite at the beginning of season 4, the rocket at the end of season 4, the cube appearing in the middle of season 5, the cube going around the map and leaving marks with anti gravity effects, the cube sinking into Loot Lake, and now the addition of the cube lifting up the middle of Loot Lake and starting off season 6 with the theme Darkness Rises.
Battle Pass
Like every season since season 2 of Fortnite it has the Battle Pass. Now for those of you who don’t know the about the Battle Pass, here's a breakdown. Battle passes consist of emotes, Xp/Xp Boost, challenges, gathering tools, gliders, backblings, toys, skins, and the newly added pets and music. All of these items from the Battle Pass are purely for show and not to boost your skills.
The Story
Up until season 4 there wasn't much story in the world of Fortnite BR, but when the meteorite hit Dusty Depot the story began and continues now with season 6 and the Cube creating mystory and the hole at the bottom of what was Loot Lake. This also created a floating Island with a wind gust that makes you float up and let you move around the area.
This is all we know for now about Fortnite but if I were to guess there will be more story throughout the season. Good luck playing!
Sports and Activities
Soccer
by Jackson S.
Soccer is a fun sport to play because you can only use your feet. If you use your hand it is called a handball and the goalies can use their hands to catch the ball only if the other team kicks the ball to the goal. The goalie can use his or her feet if the team that they’re on kicks the ball to the goal to pass the ball to the goalie.
The 18-yard line is for PK’s (penalties). If you get fouled in the 18-yard box to the goal you get to kick a PK. You have to stand on the outside of the 18 box so that the other team does not get a free kick.
A free kick is when someone gets fouled anywhere on the soccer field. If you get a free kick, you get to kick the ball to the goal that you are shooting at. You get 10 yards to kick to pass the ball to your teammates.
If there is a ball that goes out of bounds then it is an out. The other team gets to through the ball in if your team kicks it out of bounds.
