Fort Sumter
On April 12, 1861 there was a major battle. It did not have the most troops (it had a total of 585), it did not have the most death or death percentage (0 deaths), but it was the start of the civil war. The confederate bombed them for 34 hours, with only some of the shots hitting. They shot the flag pole, but Lieutenant Norman J. Hall put it back up. The union troops where running low on supplies, and eventually the surrendered. They then did a 100 gun salute, but only did a 50 gun salute because the was an explosion that killed 1 and mortally wounded another. When they came home to the north, they were considered heroes.

Antietam
On September 17, 1862 one of the bloodiest battles in american history happened. It was the battle of Antietam. There where 87 thousand union troops vs. 45 thousand confederate troops. It is considered a draw by most. Lincoln used this battle to launch his speech, The Emancipation Proclamation. This freed blacks and slaves.

Vicksburg
On May 18, 1863 an important battle took place. It was for control over the Mississippi river. The union had 77 thousand troops, while the confederates had 40 thousand. The union ended up winning. The Mississippi River was very important. It helped move supplies, and other important things.

Gettysburg
July 1, 1864 was the first day of the battle. It was 94 thousand union troops vs. 71 thousand confederate troops. There where 51 thousand casualties. The main attacks where calvary. This battle had heavy losses, but the union ended up winning.

Sherman’s march to the sea
The start of the battle was in Atlanta, and caused major damage. It started on July 22, 1864. It was Sherman’s March to the Sea. 35 thousand union troops vs. 40 thousand confederates. The confederates just had an unlock streak, running into a group of union soldiers right before the planned attack. The union ended up winning.

Appomattox Court House
On April 9, 1865, a important event took place. It was the Battle of Appomattox Court House. There where 63 thousand union troops and 26 thousand confederate troops. There where 700 casualties. The union ended up winning. This was a large portion of the ending of the civil war.

Fort Fisher
This battle was on January 13, 1865 This was a battle in North Carolina. This was mainly a navel attack. This battle caused the union to be able to close the last southern port. It was a union victory.
