Congratulations to District Boomerang Winner for October, 7th Grader Hannah Kauffman!
Congratulations to Tamanend 7th Grader Hannah Kauffman who was chosen as the middle school district Boomerang winner for the month of October. October's asset was Safety--young person feels safe at home, school, and in the community. Hannah is described by her teachers as someone who is diligent, someone who is happy to make lemonade out of lemons, and someone who is a model for other students. The safety restrictions due to COVID-19 have caused everyone to look at safety differently, but the following story about Hannah shows how she has shined during this difficult time. For band class, all students who play a woodwind or brass instruments need to "build" instrument specific PPE to play in class. In the same way that we are all wearing masks, students have been tasked with making "masks" for their instruments. Hannah came in with hers and not only was it constructed impeccably well, but she also took time to decorate and personalize it. When she showed the class her flute face shield and flute key jacket, they had various interests of hers that made the PPE truly "her own." Other students noticed and started to add decorate and personalize their PPE’s too. Not only is Hannah keeping everyone safe, but she showed her peers how being safe can be a super cool thing to do.
Congratulations, November Boomerang Winners and Nominees!
The Boomerang Youth Recognition Award is a district wide program which recognizes and honors youth in our community for exemplifying and living by the chosen asset for each month of the school year.
For the month of November, the asset was achievement motivation—recognizing a young person who is motivated to do well in school. We had 26 nominations.
We would like to highlight our building winner, 9th grade student, Heather Traub:
Heather is described by many as organized, hard-working, and independent. When thinking about achievement, we think about good grades. Although Heather has great grades, she is truly an intrinsically motivated learner. She cares about doing well in school because she cares about learning. Heather keeps her assignments organized and even works ahead on assignments which are not due yet. She enjoys projects requiring research and is excited to share with her class, family, and friends what she has found. She likes playing learning games such as Kahoot and Quizzes to help her get prepare for exams and encourages her friends to join her. Heather consistently goes above and beyond on her work and is a great role model for her peers.
Congratulations to Heather and all the following nominees: David Dougherty, Reid Ermigiotti, Luke Fromal, Devon Collins, Makayla Garcia, Isabella Markowitz, Bianca Santos, Joshua Harper, Justin Margolit, Nicholas Martin, Rachel Dash, Evan Spadt, Sheilianys Mercado Gonzalez, Samantha Thomas, Anushka Saha, Brett Barrett, Vincent Daniel, Sophiya Iurchak, Emma Soltys, Jayani Yate, Chase Smith, Julianna Tropea, Hannah Lloyd, and Nathan Zeigler.

Reminder Regarding Travelling Outside of Pennsylvania
Effective at 12 a.m. on November 20, the secretary of health tightened requirements related to anyone who travels outside of the commonwealth. The order has been expanded to include travel to any location outside of Pennsylvania. In line with the procedures already contained within our approved health and safety plan, employees and students who travel will not be able to return to school or work in-person for a period of 14 days. As we approach the holidays, please be mindful of this if you are planning to travel, and when visiting with friends and family, especially those who may have traveled, please consider social distancing measures and other precautions. The district will not be modifying the approved health and safety plan to allow individuals to return without restriction by presenting a negative test result.
Our health and safety plan is working, and we are proud of our students, faculty, and staff for their hard work in practicing our procedures consistently. With that said, we need your help. As cases within our community and across the nation rise, we are reminded of the need to remain vigilant in our commitment to mitigating the spread of the virus. This includes staying home when you are sick, wearing face coverings appropriately and consistently, and practicing the personal hygiene and social distancing measures that health authorities recommend. Thank you for all that you are doing to keep one another safe and healthy.

FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICE
Guidance Sparks
“The greatest gift parents can give their children is to help them discover their purpose and passion”, states Peter Benson a leading authority on childhood and adolescence and the author of Sparks. This can be an overwhelming challenge in today’s difficult world. Over the past 2 years, school counselors from all building levels in CBSD have developed a K-12 Guidance Plan. Brainstorming, stake-holder involvement, creative planning, goal setting and implementation continue to be part of this. The Plan includes what is currently part of our academic, social/emotional guidance curriculum and in this evolving process we will try to meet the variety of needs of our students and school community. We invite you to share in our continued learning on how to inspire passion and purpose. Articles, videos, and documents will be shared in your school newsletter on a regular basis. Look for the SPARKS picture like the one above. We hope you find this information beneficial to you and your family. We appreciate your time and involvement in the education of all our students.
For comments or questions, please contact Ginny Barrett at vbarrett@cbsd.org.

Reminder--Introducing LanSchool Air
Thank you for your support and patience as we work together to help students continue their education from home during this extraordinary time. We wanted to tell you about one of the solutions we are offering teachers to help support virtual learning: LanSchool Air.
LanSchool Air helps teachers provide instruction and guidance to students outside of the traditional classroom. This solution includes features that:
- Allow teachers to save time by pushing a website to all student devices instantly.
- Offer instant messaging between the teacher and students, giving students the opportunity to digitally “raise their hand” to indicate they’ve finished their assignment or have a question.
- Enable teachers to view students’ screens to ensure they’re staying on track.
- Provide a way for teachers to set restrictions on the websites and apps students can visit during class time.
If you would like more information about LanSchool Air, please visit the website at Lanschoolair.com.
Thank you for all you are doing to keep your children safe and learning.
