- Black Spider Monkeys initiate courtship by wrestling and playing with members of the opposite sex. They growl and give off heavy panting along with head shaking. Females identify their mate by sitting on a specific males lap.
- Some monkies live up to 48 years.
- They got their name from hanging on trees with all four legs on the tree and it looks like a spider web.
Habitat
Black Spider Monkeys can be found in dense forest habitats that are isolated from human populations. They also like rainforest.
Location
The Black Spider Monkey is located in South America, north of the amazon river. They can be found in Brazil,French, Guiana, and Suriname. Some have been found in Peru and Bolivia as well. However they do not travel any further west than Essquibio River.
Facts
The males tend to be larger than the females. They have smaller heads relative to their heads. (Males- 54.4 cm) (females- 54.0cm). They have long legs and arms and a tail that helps the balance theirselves. They are covered in dark black hair.
Status of the Spider Monkies
Endangered
This animal is key to its environment. The destruction of their ecosystems and the hunting of their species is endangering them. The WWF is protecting the rain forests to save them.
