Wisdom from the Queen Bee Mrs. Starlin
Contrary to what some people believe, learning to read is not a 'natural' process that happens all on its own. The good news is that although reading itself is a complex process, the steps taken in order to build these skills are fairly simple and straightforward. In order to teach kids how to read and make it a positive and rewarding experience, here are some easy ideas to try at home:
- Sing songs and rhymes
- Make word cards
- Play word games in the car
- Introduce simple word games on a regular basis. Focus on playing games that encourage your child to listen, identify, and manipulate the sounds in words. For example, start by asking questions like “What sound does the word _____ start with?” “What sound does the word _____ end with?” “What words start with the sound _____?” and “What word rhymes with _____?”

Mental Health with Mrs. Darby
Managing your Mental Health while keeping hope alive in others through the gift of GIVING.
For those of us who are struggling to make it through this season, and suffering from the emotional complications of a global pandemic, GIVING has actually been known to boost your mental and physical health. There is evidence that GIVING creates a “warm Glow” activating regions in the brain connecting to pleasure, and feelings of trust which is why there is a sense of excitement for others as well as yourself when gifting. A few benefits that can be associated with giving are increased self-esteem, less depression, lower stress, longer life, greater happiness, and satisfaction.
By giving we not only help our mental and physical health, but create a “warm glow” which in turn can boost someone else’s mental and physical health. It is times like these that our closest friends, relatives, neighbors, family, and most importantly spouses need to experience the gift of GIVING. So as you ponder what you have to give, think about who could use some of your time, who would benefit from a little social and emotional support, and those in need of just a little TLC - Tender Love and Care.
There is no doubt that your Mental and Physical Health will Thank You, and so will the people you decide to bless through the GIFT of GIVING.
Blessings,
