Written iMovie Steps (Video Below)
Opening iMovie
1. If this icon is on your Dock, you can click it to open it.
2. If the icon is not on your Dock, you will need to click Finder > Applications > and the icon should be in this folder.
Note: If you do not have iMovie on your device, try to download it from the App Store. It has likely been "purchased" for your device and simply needs to be downloaded.
Starting a New Project
1. Click on the "+" sign
2. Select Movie (Movie is a blank slate and the trailer is a template)
Adding Items to iMovie
Images: Creative Commons and Pixabay both offer copyright free images. Once you download the image, it saves to your device.
Video: Record a video clip using QuickTime. This also saves to your device, likely on your desktop or in your downloads.
Audio: In the "media" section of iMovie (upper left-hand box), select "audio." By default this is set to iTunes (on the left), but once switched to sound effects there is a large variety of audio clips to choose from.
To add these three items:
1. Drag the file into iMovie
2. If it is an audio file, drag it to the bottom section of the workspace
3. If it is an image or video file, drag it to the center of the workspace
Green Screen
2. Select the clip of yourself by clicking on it. A yellow outline should appear around the clip.
3. In the upper right hand corner, where you can view the clip, you will select the first item in the tool bar. The tool bar is directly above the viewing tool.
4. A dropdown will appear, you will select "Green/Blue Screen"
Picture in Picture
1. Drag the image above the clip of yourself. (Whatever is on top will appear in the small box)
2. Select the image by clicking on it. A yellow outline should appear around the clip.
3. In the upper right hand corner, where you can view the clip, you will select the first item in the tool bar.
4. A dropdown will appear, you will select "Picture in Picture"
Minor Editing
To lengthen or shorten a clip:
1. Select the clip (audio, video, or image)
2. Be sure the clip is outlined in yellow
3. Move your cursor to one end of the clip, it should change into an arrow pointing both left and right
4. Moving the clip outward will extend it and moving the clip inward will begin to shorten and remove parts of it.
To crop a clip (especially useful with green screen):
1. Select the clip (video or image)
2. Be sure the clip is outlined in yellow
3. Above the viewing screen, select the crop tool. If you hover your cursor over the icons, the title of the tool will appear. This is helpful if you do not remember which icon enables cropping.
4. Select the "Crop to Fill" option
5. Pull the corners in
6. Click, hold, and drag the rectangle to reposition it
7. Press enter when you are done.
