Tips on Maintaining a Consistent Schedule
1. Stick to the Regular School Schedule- Try to stick to a relatively similar school schedule, meaning waking up in the morning before classes normally start, eating a good and healthy breakfast, and then begin a scheduled day of schoolwork and activities.
2. Create a visual schedule together- Use your imagination to create a fun and visual schedule for your kids to easily see and understand what they have planned for the day or week. It can be using a wall to decorate as a big life size schedule, a whiteboard, a printed-out schedule with pictures, whatever works for you. Use it not just for school but for additional activities you may have planned like afternoon walks, backyard time, baking together, arts and crafts ideas, etc. This can not only create structure but also help your child organize himself or herself, thus preventing any tantrums, difficulty transitioning, etc.
3. Schedule active time- Make sure to schedule some time every day for your child to be active, including running around in the backyard, going outside, etc. This is important for your child’s health and can help with the difficulty of being stagnant all day long.
4. Visual cues- Use visual cues or supports to help your child transition from one activity to the next. Show your child five minutes before the activity ends what is the next activity that is anticipated. Tell him or her out loud “we have five more minutes until we move onto going on a walk.” This helps prepare your child and transition him or her smoothly.
5. Know your child- If you know your child focuses better in the morning rather than the afternoon that might be a good time to do schoolwork or overall studying activities. Work with your child to create the best educational environment for him or her.
6. Alter your routine in the weekend- In order to differentiate the days, make sure to have a different routine on the weekend that is more flexible, fun, and easy going. This can help separate and form a more structured routine during the weekdays.
7. Create a positive atmosphere- Patience and a positive approach can make life at home a little bit easier. Don’t expect your child to go from 0-100 in one day, do it gradually, make it fun, and structure the day to include an overall enjoyable environment.
