A Note from Mrs. Hough
Welcome Back, Pirates to a SUPER school year at Lake Wylie! We are off to a great start!
I would like thank all of our families that came out to Open House to meet your child’s teacher. Please continue to attend all school events this year as we strive to engage all families at our school. The main focus of starting any school year is immediately establishing a culture and climate throughout the school building that promotes high expectations for student behavior and academic achievement. I assure you that this is indeed the case within our school.
A Message from Mrs. Patel
We will continue to utilize a school-wide discipline plan policy. The purpose of the school’s discipline policy is to develop a structure of consistency in discipline using proactive, preventative approaches. In conjunction with our school-wide discipline policy, our students will be learning and applying the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People to their daily lives. We want all of our students to be leaders in the school and develop a respect for others, themselves, and learning.
Our school will be using a clip chart to monitor student behavior. Each student has a clothespin that will start at “Ready to Learn” each day. The clothespin can be moved up and down throughout the day based on behavior. We expect all of our students to be on “Ready to Learn” each day. There is a description for each of the behaviors below. Students will move up the clip chart for behavior that is above and beyond.
When students do not follow the outlined school-wide discipline plan they will receive consequences based on the philosophy of progressive discipline. Progressive discipline uses a consistent approach that starts with a minor consequence for first offenses to a more severe consequence for repeat offenses. We will follow the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Code of Conduct book as part of our discipline plan.
If your child’s teacher contacts you about a discipline concern for your child, please be supportive and responsive to work with us, so that your child’s behavior has a positive outcome. Please contact your child's classroom teacher first if you have questions about their behavior.
We look forward to a great year and your continued support!
The Counselor's Corner
Welcome to a new school year! The counseling department is excited to share with you some new initiatives for the 2016-2017 school year. The first is Attendance Counts Week. Here at Lake Wylie, we believe it is crucial for student achievement that every student to be at school-on time-everyday. Attendance Counts Week was developed to promote awareness about the importance of good attendance. Attendance Counts Week will be held September 12th-16th. During this week there will be spirit days for the student’s to partake in. More information will come in the student’s Thursday folders.
The second initiative is “Coffee with the Counselors”. This event will be held twice a year in which parents are invited to the school to enjoy coffee and donuts with members of the counseling department. It is also a time to learn about and discuss specific issues within our school. The first “Coffee with the Counselors” event will be held on September 16th at 8:30 to end Attendance Counts Week. At the event, we will be discussing Attendance and Bullying. More information will come in the student’s Thursday folders.
We encourage your involvement and look forward to a great school year!

What's Happening at Lake Wylie?
The North Star Reading Program
We had great success with the North Star Reading Partners program at Lake Wylie last school year and are expanding this year to include 3rd and 4th grade students! Our goal is for all of our third and fourth grade students who are reading below grade level to be matched up with a mentor who will come in and read with them for one hour per week. There are lesson plans for all the mentors to follow. The students really love being involved in the program and look forward to the time with their mentors each week. If you are interested in being a part the program please contact me and I will set up an orientation and training. Please feel free to contact me by by email Jennifer.phalin@cms.k12.nc.us or by phone (980) 343-3680 if you have any questions.
Pirate Parent Website
Welcome back to school! We are so excited to have our students back and continue to help them learn and grow as readers, mathematicians, scientists, and overall learners. In an effort to communicate information about what your child is learning in the classroom, we have created a Pirate Parent website. This website provides resources for you, the parents, to help your Pirate succeed at Lake Wylie Elementary. We want to give you the tools you may need to help your child at home. On the site, you will find links to Comprehension Questions for each Reading Level. You can use these at home to ask your child questions about the book they are reading. Students need to answer these questions orally as well as be able to write a response to the text, using details from the text. We will be assessing your child this month to find their current reading level. The link is: https://sites.google.com/a/cms.k12.nc.us/pirateparents/. You can also find this link on the school’s website by clicking on the Pirate Parents in the sidebar.
One School, One Book
This month our school will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One School, One Book™. Every family will receive a copy of the same book – Jacqueline Davies’s The Lemonade War – and will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. The books were purchased by Good Shepherd Church. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book™ program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, and even administrative staff will all be following along together.
Your child will receive a copy of The Lemonade War on Curriculum Night. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each night.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In class, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about The Lemonade War!
One School, One Book™ is a novel program in that children of all grade levels will all be listening to their parents read same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child's own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.
I know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. I hope to talk with both you and your student sometime this month about Jessie and Evan and their lemonade competition – and maybe even a little about math and economics! "When a whole school reads a book, there's a lot to talk about." With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.
Outer Banks (OBX) Trip Meeting for 5th Grade
Our 5th grade students will take a field trip to the Outer Banks April 4-6, 2017. Students will visit places like Jeanette's Pier, The Wright Brothers Museum, The NC Aquarium, and Ocracoke Island. An information meeting for parents is scheduled for September 8th at 6pm in the Lake Wylie Media Center. Chaperones are needed and payment plans are available. This is our 4th year taking the trip and it truly is an awesome experience.

PlaySpanish - An After School Club
Lake Wylie will host PlaySpanish on Fridays from 3:15-4:15 pm.
We, Carmela Tondo-Mata and Ricardo Mata, started the program in January 1997 with a group of 5 students. As we celebrate our 19th year playing with children, every week we have approximately 2,000 students participating in our classes throughout the Greater Charlotte area. Over the past 19 years, we have worked with over 15,000 children.
The classes are led by degreed native speakers and conducted in a small-group setting with an average class size of 8 students. The groups are organized by age and previous exposure to the language so that nobody feels left out or behind. In a typical group, the age range is no more than 2 or 2 ½ years of age between the youngest and the oldest child. Classes last between 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the age of the children.
Parents are encouraged to join us in class whenever possible. Since the setting is very casual, a PlaySpanish™® class is a great way to relax and spend quality time with your child.
