Collection Analysis
This collection analysis was very informative to Cari and I. I looked at the collection at DAR High School Library. The assignment was to record the copyright date of every tenth book in the entire 900 section of the library. At first, I was thinking I was going to have to put my hands on every tenth book in this section, but Mrs. Sutton showed me how to print the title and copyright of every book in the 900 section. The report was found through the Follett Destiny back office reports. This saved a tremendous amount of time but it still took a very long time to do this. After printing the report, I highlighted every tenth book so I wouldn’t get confused. I then charted each copyright date on the collection chart. There were a total of 1,943 books in this section of the library. The average year was 1972. I really thought this might be higher because we have bought some newer books for this section the last couple of years. The oldest copyright in this section was 1952. Mrs. Sutton explained that just because it has an older copyright doesn’t always mean you should weed it. If it no longer benefits the curriculum, then you should weed it. The latest copyright in this section was 2010.
Mrs. Sutton explained that the library has not received any state money in several years. The local board of education gives the library what is called “survival money”. She received it in the month of October like she would usually receive state money. This is money to pay for the automation system. It also pays for any periodicals and other things that she really needs to continue receiving such as current biography. This leaves very little money to purchase books. With little funds available, books have mainly been bought for other sections and not too many for the 900 section. She explained that history doesn’t change so she is less likely to use those funds to buy books for this section. When funds become available again, she plans on updating this section.
The decision of where to update books comes from teachers and student requests. When teachers come to the library to do research and have a hard time finding resources, she makes a note of the topic. She then puts it in a folder for future purchases. When funds are available, this is the first place she looks at to make purchases.
According to the circulation records, books in the 900 section are not checked out very frequently. This section is mainly used for research projects. Teachers and students know to inform her if they have difficulty finding a certain topic and she will make a note and put it in the folder. If she does not have resources for a topic, she directs that person to the Alabama Virtual Library. This is a great resource with a wide abundance of databases. This is a resource that not many of our teachers really use. The way she knows that is because students come to her and she directs them to the AVL and they have no idea what she is talking about. She is trying to change this. This is a resource they can use now and all the way through college.
I really relied on Mrs. Sutton to help me with the project. She has never done a collection analysis in the high school library because she recently transferred from the elementary library. Mrs. Sutton really enjoyed learning the results that I compiled from this assignment. I hope I showed her the importance of doing this so hopefully she can do the other sections in the library in the future. This is a great way to help one be more aware of their collection.

Justifications
After analyzing the 900 section of DAR High School Library and interviewing the librarian, Mrs. Sutton, I realized that some places that needed updating was countries. The library had some country books. However, several books were outdated or severely damaged. Another area which needed updating was literature on current wars. Some of the history classes have been doing projects on the Gulf War and Afghanistan War and the library needs to expand the resources available for these students. We plan on ordering some e-books for these sections also. The 900 section is used mainly for research. E-books will allow students to view their books from home on an e-reader. This will allow more students access to these books if we buy the unlimited availability.
How did we decide what books to buy? There are many selection tools which can be used. We used the School Library Journal, Booklists, and Library Media Connection to find materials that would benefit the students and teachers. All three sources gave us many options to choose, and then we began a more detailed search. We focused on countries that we did not have any or just a few books on and current wars. The Alabama Course of Study has many objectives for high school students dealing with other countries. Students should be able to analyze how cultural elements can facilitate global understanding or misunderstanding. These can be experienced through language, art, music, literature, and belief systems. The books we purchased will help students achieve this objective. We also bought books about our current wars. The Alabama Course of Study has objectives about terrorism and modern weapons. These can be achieved through students characterizing the war on terrorism, which includes the significance of the Gulf Wars and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Students should also be able to depict geographic locations of major world events from 1945 to the present according to an objective in the Alabama Course of Study. So after our research, we realized this was two areas in the 900 section that needs to be updated so students can achieve/meet the objectives in the Alabama Course of Study and be able to learn about current and past world events.
