LSA JUNIOR INTERNSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
KATE MURRAY and KADIE RUSHING- INTERNING WITH BEST VERSION MEDIA
Under the direction of Denise Milisitz, both Kadie and Kate are interning with Best Version Media, which creates community publications across the U.S. and Canada. BVM’s mission is to bring people together, one community at a time, by tailoring publications to the areas they serve. So far, Kate has written stories about Cox High School’s volleyball team and the 40th anniversary of Operation Smile. Kadie has written stories about the First Colonial High School’s Dance team. Both students covered the Vera Wang Bridal Runway on New Year’s Eve. Hosted at Studio I do, Kadie says, “we were welcomed with gorgeous dresses and delicious food.” Students spent the first half of the school year preparing for their internships by learning about workplace readiness skills such as conflict resolution in the workplace, confidentiality, and professionalism. It seems both students have had to apply these skills to their work experiences. Kate says, “My internship requires networking, resilience, and a strong work ethic. It can be difficult to ask for help, especially when you know everyone is older than you. My internship forces me to step outside my comfort zone and ask for help because I know it will better my work.”
NOAH MARTIN - INTERNING WITH THE YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY
Under the direction of MPO Allen Perry, Noah is participating in the Youth Police Academy. The Virginia Beach Police Department leads the course that takes place on Tuesday evenings from 6-8 pm here in the Library at First Colonial. The students have taken a variety of field trips to enhance the learning taking place in the classroom setting. On January 4, 2022, the YPA took a field trip to Special Operations and got a tour of the facility. This included armored cars, helicopters, and other forms of gear needed for more serious policing situations. Pictured are the mounted police of the Virginia Beach Police Department.
JORYN WOLD and OLIVIA WALLACE - INTERNING WITH BRETTA LEWIS, ESQ. at WOLCOTT, RIVERS, & GATES
Under the direction of Mrs. Bretta Lewis, local divorce attorney, Olivia and Joryn are interning with Wolcott, Rivers, and Gates Law Firm. Both students have immersed themselves in the legal field and have been afforded some amazing opportunities with Mrs. Lewis. Recently, both students attended the trial of a divorce case belonging to Mrs. Lewis’ colleague, Mr. Ameet Habib. Olivia and Joryn got to hear proceedings involving alimony and division of property. Both students showed an additional interest in the court reporter!
NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK
LSA SENIORS SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND RESEARCH PAPERS
LSA Seniors ended their Legal Research and Writing class with research presentations. Each student created a 5-minute presentation encapsulating what they learned through the research process and how the research supports their thesis. Students presented to their class as well as to select faculty members. After each presentation, students fielded questions and accepted presentation feedback. Now it's onward and upward to senior project!
SOPHOMORES SPEND THE DAY AT LETA
The Introduction to Criminal Justice class participated in a field trip to the Law Enforcement Training Academy where they were immersed in the policing field. The morning started with a question and answer session with Deputy Chief Shannon Wichtendahl, Captian Spivey, Sergeant Ball, and Sergeant Washington. Students then participated in a modified training session with police officers. They rotated through a circuit of 6 activities and chatted with the officers about the importance of physical fitness and endurance. After the workout, students were introduced to MILO Virtual, a simulation training systems provider for government, military, law enforcement, and police agencies for critical incident training, de-escalation, decision support training, traditional tactical judgment training, and firearms proficiency training. Sergeant Washington interacted with several scenarios to simulate real-time decisions an officer must make when working a call. Lastly, students were able to interact with a variety of Special Operations departments including K9, mounted police, dive team, and forensics.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Daily and punctual school attendance is essential to each student's academic development. Absence from school is detrimental to student achievement.
Personal illness, illness or death in the family, exposure to contagious disease, religious holidays, extremely inclement weather, or school-sponsored/related activities will be considered legitimate excuses for a student's absence. The parent or legal guardian must provide written notice to the attendance office within three(3) days of the student's absence.
Requests for pre-approved excused absences should be made in writing, and submitted to the attendance office, by the parent or legal guardian and should state the reasons for absence and the time of absence. Approval by Mrs. Phillips is required prior to the absence.
Students having more than six (6) class absences from a class (excused or unexcused) within a given semester will be considered as having excessive absences and will result in a 63/N failing grade for the course.
COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS
All Legal Studies Academy Students are required to complete 50 hours of community service for each year they attend the program. Students can log their service hours using this App Garden link. Hours for the month should be recorded no later than the 30th of each month.
