Beginning Band
It is NOT too late to sign a 5th grader up for band. Have them contact the HS Band Office.
QUEEN!!
Tayzia proudly marched our halftime show in her dress and crown (and Dinkles... not heals).
Congratulations also to French Horn player Aubree Bear who served on the court as the junior attended.
More Games?
1) The next two weeks are away games (and the band will not attend).
2) Week 7 is the beginning of the playoffs. Our team is in good position to get a good seed for the playoffs. That seeding (final determination next week) will set the "home or away" schedule for week 7. Or maybe we'll get a "bye" week if we are seeded high enough. So maybe we'll have a game week 7 and maybe not. Which means maybe we'll have a game on 8 or maybe not. And either of these games could be home or maybe they won't.
3) We expect that playoff games that are "home" will allow bands to perform pregame and halftime as they have so far this year. But maybe not. We assume bands will not travel to "away" playoff games... but maybe they will.
4) We think playoff games might be on Friday nights... but maybe they'll be on Saturday.
5) If/when the team loses a playoff game then they have the option of scheduling more "regular season" games (yes... regular season games that are AFTER their playoff games... maybe we should call these "irregular season" game). Maybe these games will be home... but maybe they won't. Teams are allowed a maximum of 10 games (unless they are still in the playoffs... then they play as many as it takes to have a state champion).
Are you confused yet? Remember back in July and August when I kept saying "We don't know. But when we know then you will know"?? Yeah - we are back to THAT. There are a LOT of "TBA" dates not the Google Calendar. We just won't know what will happen until it is about to happen.
We are HOPING for more home games so we can present our NEW SHOW "Beneath the Surface: LOVE".
Also - this week we are passing out Symphonic Band audition materials. Because that's happening.
Food for thought
WINNERS identify the problem and find a solution. And if the solution has additional problems then they find solutions to those problems too. If the end goal is worth achieving then the WINNER will find as many solutions as they need in order to overcome all the problems. Winners talk about "What if we..." and "How about we try...". Winners think outside the box. Winners are creative. Winners aren't afraid to "fail" because they realize that failure is just an opportunity to solve another problem and find another solution.
LOSERS see things the other way. When presented with problem they see all the smaller problems. If a loser is given a possible solution they see even more problems inside that solution. Losers become paralyzed by the hurdles before them. Losers start sentences with "But..." and "I don't think...".
Political strategist James Carville (who worked on the Bill Clinton election campaign) once said "when we had war room meetings and someone had an idea, the first person who saw a problem was then tasked with making the original idea work." They understood that losers will ONLY see problems and never solutions. They were forcing people to find the solutions, or to get out of the way.
TRUE - there aren't always solutions. Sometimes a problem is insurmountable. This "winners versus losers" idea is not pie in the sky Polly Anna talk. Sometimes we fail. Sometimes the solutions just aren't there. But the WINNER will still find a way to learn from that situation and make themselves better for the future.
I am so proud that the Van Wert Band looks for solutions. I am proud that our students find a way to play and march and perform in a mask. I am proud that our parents found a way to do concessions. There are MILLIONS of examples of us choosing to be winners. I hope all of our students will use this example throughout their lives.
If you give winner a problem - they'll find a solution.
If you have a loser a solution - they'll find a problem.
I'm glad I am on the team with WINNERS!!
