Kia ora koutou
I hope you have all enjoyed your Easter Break and had some down time. It is hard to believe that the end of term is upon us with the school term ending for Hawera Intermediate students next week on Thursday April 15th.
A Teacher Only Day is being held on Friday 16th April- staff will be travelling to Palmerston North to undertake Professional Development, school re-opens for Term 2 on Monday May 3rd.
As Term 1 winds up we thank Mrs Surgenor for stepping up and taking over responsibilities in the Hard Technology Room whilst Mr Heather has been on secondment to the Fire Service.
Mr Crawford who very capably assisted in the design process within this space has also been farewelled, returning to Vietnam. We welcome Mr Heather back at the start of Term 2.
Over the term we have had a number of students attend 2Nui Code at Ngati Ruanui Campus in Princes Street. Approximately 30 students have attended sessions on a weekly basis practicing and learning Coding Skills and designing and working in Innovative Space. We thank tutors Vincent Nuku and Nicola Coogan for their support of our students and look forward to Term 2 sessions.
Summer Sports are coming to their conclusion. We now look forward to our Intermediate Schools' Summer Sports Challenges against Highlands, Manukorihi and Devon next Tuesday 13th. Cricket and Volleyball is played here at Hawera, other sports are held at schools in New Plymouth. Details to follow.
Camp preparation is currently underway, as you can imagine an enormous amount of work goes into bookings, fundraising, applying for grants etc for these to proceed. We are excited to be able to offer a variety of choice for students to nominate their preferred camp. All students will receive a "Job Card" to assist in fundraising the required amount for the camp of their choice. Places fill up fast so first in first served!
Job Cards will be forwarded next week.
Enjoy your holiday break, it's not far away, do remember Anzac Day falls within the break. Hawera Intermediate Councillors will be present in the parade, and of course all students are encouraged to remember our fallen soldiers at this commemorative service.

Kia Ora Whanau
My name is Emily Davidson, I grew up in the Wairarapa and have lived in Taranaki for the past 18 years. I am married with 3 children who all attend Patea Area School. We moved to Hawera from the Taranaki coast two years ago. My background teaching experience is mostly associated with The Arts, which I am extremely passionate about.
I have worked at Hawera Intermediate since last year and this is my third term teaching Visual Arts which I absolutely love. The student’s ideas and creative perspectives are thriving here.
Outside of school I am a community minded person, currently I help run a Taranaki wide baby loss support group, am involved in Hawera Repertory, a local church and I love to share resources from my garden.

Tena koutou katoa,
This year I am in Food Technology and relieving in Rooms 4, 8 &12. I look forward to working alongside all our tamariki.
I have lived in South Taranaki for 9 years with my husband Harry and our children. We moved down from Auckland for a lifestyle change and have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Hawera and now in Eltham. It has been great getting to know whanau and making new friends.
We love exploring the beautiful scenery and landscape of Taranaki.
Mauri ora.
Performing Arts
Kia ora,
I am teaching Performing Arts again this year. I enjoy singing, playing and performing whenever I can. Having sung for the New Zealand Secondary students choir and been involved in many Hawera Repertory Society productions I know how beneficial Performing Arts is and look forward to inspiring the next generation of performers also.
I am a keen sportsman who has played a multitude of sports over my junior years. In my spare time if I'm not on stage, coaching or busy with different projects, you will find me as a professional sideline supporter to my children and their many dancing and sporting activities.
Kia kawea tātou e te rēhia, Let us be taken by the spirit of joy, of entertainment.
South Taranaki Ki o Rahi Day
Thanks to Matua Tuki for taking the team and we wish you all the best.
Māori have rich ball playing histories. Ki o Rahi has evolved out of archaic forms of play which are based on the depiction of Rahi, a legendary figure, feeding his tupuna, in the form of a large rock, with his ‘mauri’ contained in a small kete, or ‘ki’. The important central ‘tupu’ in this game is represented by an actual rock, or carved log, at only a few locations in NZ. Generally today a large drum is used as the central target instead. The game involves quick passing, alertness, game cunning, intelligence, team cohesion, inclusiveness, whānaungatanga and lots of fun.
Teacher Only Day
Term 2 begins Monday 3 May.
Beginning Next Term...
Lunch in School begins in Term 2. Hawera Intermediate is part of a Ministry of Education pilot scheme which will see all students receive a daily lunch. Subway, Pita Pit and Tika Catering businesses successfully tendered to be providers at our school. Students lunches will be dropped off at our canteen and then taken to classrooms daily.
Students will still provide their own morning tea.
All students will have a return slip provided today to inform us of any special dietary or religious requests, this does not include personal preference, details will be provided to our caterers to ensure student needs are met.
(Special diet refers to where students have religious, ethical or medical reasons for avoiding eating particular foods.
It does not extend to food preferences, fussy eating, or non medical aversions to particular foods)
In Terms Two and Three we are in our winter uniform. This is not much of a change, except that students are allowed to wear plain navy blue or black long sleeved thermals under their uniform if they choose, and bottle green or black scarves and beanies. Black shoes and navy socks are compulsory during this time as well. Socks are knee length and navy blue. Girls wear the mid-calf socks which are available at The Warehouse in packs of 5 as they are considerably cheaper. Girls socks are a nylon type fabric or they can wear navy blue woollen stockings for extra warmth if desired. Boys' socks are knee length and woollen. Shoes are plain black - no labels or tags in any colour other than black. They need to be able to hold a shine and repel water when it rains, so leather or vinyl not canvas thank you. PLEASE name these items - even socks if you can as once they are taken off it is impossible to find the owners. A good idea is to name shoes along the edge of the heel under the foot as this does not usually touch the ground and twink pens will work there for a period of time. Otherwise use vivid inside the shoes. Make the names bold and clear please.
Tuesday 13 April
If your child has been selected as part of a travelling team, please note the following:
Buses will depart from Hawera Intermediate at 8.30am to the different venues and return by 3.00pm.
All students will need to travel in their sports school uniform and bring a hat, sunblock, lunch and a drink.
Parents who wish to collect children from the summer sports after the sports exchange are required to send a written note to the Coach of their child’s team before the sports day or they will be required to take the bus back to Hawera.
Completed permission slips need to be returned to the teacher in charge of your child's sport by Friday 9 April

The Green Team
A small group of students who make up the Enviro Team have been working with Sustainable Taranaki in the Art room every Thursday.
The team's goal was to complete a project that would help the environment in some way so in the first couple of weeks students wrote down the options of what they wanted to do and then voted on it.
The wininng project was 'chickens'.
Over the next couple of weeks we focussed on planning a chicken hutch design that would provide shelter, warmth and be easily portable.
A big thank you to Sustainable Taranaki who have provided the tools and resources necessary for the project as well as their skills and support. - by Theo Soothill
