A Message from Ms. McKay
April is poetry month, and this week Dike-Newell has really been enjoying some poetry! From poems on the morning announcements, to a school-wide video of poems being read and shared, to Poem in Your Pocket Day, we love poetry!
Poem in Your Pocket Day was initiated in April 2002 by the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in partnership with the city’s Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education. In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took the initiative to all fifty United States, encouraging individuals around the country to participate. In 2016, the League of Canadian Poets extended Poem in Your Pocket Day to Canada.
Dike-Newell School loves Poem in your Pocket Day!! Students had pockets on lanyards with poems they could share throughout the day. While the day this year fell during our break, we celebrated it upon our return to school.
Lines from the Library
As Earth day was on Monday, April 22nd, we also read "Earth Day" by Rachel Grack as well as "10 Things I Can Do to Help My World" by Melanie Walsh. Students then brainstormed ways to help our planet.
News from the Nurse - Take Back Day April 2024
Saturday, April 27th
Take the opportunity to do a little spring cleaning and bring your unused prescription medications to a drop off location this Saturday for National Take Back Day.
Storing expired or old medications poses a serious risk to accidental ingestion by children. It has been found that child resistant medicine containers do not always prevent child access.
Proper disposal of medications that are no longer needed also helps to prevent the misuse or theft of prescriptions and ensures medications are kept out of our water supply.
Find a location to dispose of medications and learn more about National Take Back Day on this website.
