Principal's Message
Dear Petway Parents,
December is such an exciting month. It is a time for family, friends, and the true spirit of giving. We are teaching our Patriots the meaning of the holiday season by encouraging them to think of others.
We appreciate all our parents who attended our fall conferences. Communicating with your child’s teacher will ensure your child’s success and provide you with valuable information.
With all of December’s anticipation, it is more important than ever to keep your child focused on school. I encourage you to continue speaking with your child about what they are learning in school, review your child’s assignments, and remind children to always follow our Pathway to Patriot Pride. The holiday season is the perfect time to focus on positive behavior and good choices.
This month we encourage your family to spend time with our family. Our Petway Players will be hosting Santa and Me on December 11, 2018. Come out and enjoy dinner, Santa, and plenty of photo opportunities.
Petway's Chorus, The Petway Prodiges, has a special community performance this season. On December 10th at 6:30 pm, they will be performing at the CommUNITY Tree lighting on the Ave. at the Mini-Park, located on the corner of Landis Avenue and the Boulevard. We hope you can come out and enjoy the beautiful performances.
Our grand finale will be our musical presentation of “A Holiday Extravaganza”. Please join all our students as they entertain you with the gift of song on December 13th. Petway will host two shows. Kindergarten through 2nd grades will perform at 9:45 am (parents may arrive no earlier than 9:30 am) and 3rd through 5th grades will perform at 1:45 pm (parents may arrive no earlier than 1:30 pm). Our Chorus will perform on stage during both performances. All are invited to this melodious presentation! Please remember to bring photo ID.
Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. Enjoy your time together as a family, reflect on the triumphs of the past year, and set goals for 2019.
Happy Holidays,
Mrs. Jennifer Frederico

Students of the Month
First Grade
This month in Reading we are continuing to practice our reading strategies. We are reading and discussing both fiction and nonfiction selections. Please continue to have your child read to you. The more your child reads the better readers they become. In Math, we will be expanding our knowledge of subtraction skills. Please continue to practice math facts, addition and subtraction up to 10. This month students will be learning about different types of energy. We will also discuss different seasonal holidays and how we celebrate them. Thank you for donating to the Turkey Trot. The school was able to create many baskets for needy families.

Second Grade
Second Graders had a wonderful month full of learning and fun filled events. In Math, the children have begun learning various addition strategies and will eventually be adding three-digit numbers. They will improve their fact fluency and mental math skills as well. In Reading, we are studying non-fiction text features and narratives elements of fiction. Please ask your child to read daily for at least 10-15 minutes. Here are a few questions to ask your little reader?
**Was your text fiction or non-fiction?
**Who are the characters?
**What is the setting?
**Was there a problem in the story? How was it solved?
**What did you learn from the text?
Please remember that students may access all of their reading and math links when they login to their google account from home. They can view the days math lesson or their reading book through Think Central. They also have other links such as ExtraMath, Bookflix, and Tumblebooks.
This month also gave the students a chance to spread kindness during our Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot. We were so happy and thankful that many families sent in items that will be given out to those in our Petway family that are in need. It also was a great opportunity to exercise our bodies as we trotted around the school. Second graders also had the opportunity to show encouragement and cooperation during their classroom Thanksgiving Play. They encouraged our shyest performers to do their very best, and worked together to sing all songs perfectly in sync with one another. They enjoyed learning about the history of the first Thanksgiving in a hands-on way. They all made the cutest Native Americans and Pilgrims as they used their loudest speaking voice reading the A-Z Thanksgiving play. We are very thankful for our Second Grade Patriots and their families. Thank you to all the parents for attending parent-teacher conferences, and for donating items to our Thanksgiving celebration this month. The children really enjoyed the treats.

Fourth Grade
The entire Fourth Grade had so much to be Thankful for last month. They trotted their way around the entire school and donated several food items that would help Petway Families in need. Our Petway Patriots are always willing to lend a Helping Hand to make our community a better place. For Harvest Day they built structures made from candy corn and various materials, and made Marvelous Multiplication Pumpkins! In Math, they are moving away from Multiplication and Daringly Diving into Division. The opposite of multiplication is division, so they are continuously practicing their fact families. Speaking of families, the Fourth Graders Gobbled down with GOOD MANNERS a Thanksgiving Pie Celebration with their friends. In Social Studies they learned how hundreds of years ago the Pilgrims and the Native Americans came together and COOPERATED to accomplish a spectacular harvest feast. Did you know that New Jersey is known for its bountiful harvest? That's why it is called the Garden State!! This marking period they will begin their expedition into Science and learn all about force of motion and speed. The Fourth Grade Team would like to give a special THANK YOU to the Petway Parents for contributing so much in the month of November!

Fifth Grade
Fifth graders have been staying busy as usual. In Reading, students finished their first core novel, Wonder. It received rave reviews. Be sure to ask your child about it! Classes are now reading a selection of Auggie and Me. By reading The Julian Chapter, students will finally learn about the story events from Julian’s point of view. Ask your child about Julian. In Writing, classes are moving into their Literary Analysis unit. This involves writing about text they’ve read. It involves quoting from text and using a lot of higher order thinking to compose a short essay. In Social Studies, classes have been learning about the English colonies. This will set us up for the Revolutionary War. In Science, students are entering Life Science. This is all about animals in their environments, learning about the food chain, and understanding processes like photosynthesis. And finally, in Math, students are diving into the world of decimals! Students will understand place value of decimals, how to read and write them, and how to add and subtract them. Keep up the good work, fifth graders. Thank you to all the parents and guardians for attending conferences. It’s always great to discuss your child’s progress. We hope everyone enjoyed their holiday!
