Student Led Conferences - Thursday, March 21, 2024 (No School for Students)
Your student will present and reflect on their progress in school by sharing goals and assignments. Homeroom teachers will reach out to schedule a time on Thursday, March 21, 2024 for you to come in and celebrate your student! If you haven’t heard from your homeroom teacher yet, reach out to them via email. You can find all staff members’ email addresses here:
https://ecksteinms.seattleschools.org/staff/
There is no school for students on March 21, 2024 to accommodate these conferences.
This is an Eckstein event only. All other schools are open and having classes.

Spring Sports at EMS
Seattle Public Schools and Eckstein offer three sport options: Co-ed Track, Girls Volleyball and Boys Soccer. Track is a no-cut sport whereas Soccer and Volleyball are cut sports. As with the Fall and Winter sports there will only be two teams, a JV and Varsity team for each sport. We will continue to have robust teams in order to develop our younger athletes.
Tryouts For Boys Soccer and Girls Volleyball
- There will be two robust teams per program this year, a JV and Varsity team for each sport. This is based on an SPS policy change. We will not add any other teams.
- There will be cuts to create teams. Unfortunately, there is not a guaranteed spot on the team if your athlete played last year.
- The volleyball and soccer teams will have a mix of all grade levels. Exception, there will be no 8th graders placed on JV.
- All paperwork and physicals must have been completed and uploaded to FinalForms by March 13th at four o’clock to participate at tryouts on March 14th.
- If you need support for a physical contact Nyx our Social Worker: nclewis1@seattleschools.org
- There will be no late tryouts for soccer and volleyball.
- Head coaches have final decision of who makes the Eckstein team.
Boys Soccer:
Tryouts began on Thursday, March 14. We will also have tryouts on March 19, right after school from 4:00-5:30 on our field. Practice begins on the 21st. Parent pick-up may be a little later.
This season will be different from those in the past, as we will only have two teams, the varsity and one JV, which, unfortunately, means that there will be cuts.
Our regular practice time will be 4:00-5:30 on our field on Tuesday and Thursday each week.
Games will be held on Saturday mornings. Game schedule will be coming soon.
We look forward to seeing you – Go Eagles!
Girls Volleyball:
Welcome volleyball players, tryouts began on March, 14th. Tryouts continue on March 15tH at 4-6pm, March 19 at 4:30-6:30 pm (NEW TIME), and on March 20th at 2:45-4:30 pm .
We will have to our first cuts on March 15th. Teams will be announced after the practice on March 20th. The first official practice for Varsity will be on March 21st from 4:00 – 5:30.
Our first game will be on March 23rd.
More information about practice times for both teams will be sent through FinalForms.
Track:
Track season begins with the first practice March 18 at 4:00pm on the track behind school. We start on time. Come prepared for ANY weather. Sunscreen, multiple layers, hats and gloves and a bottle of water. Our track coaches are so stoked about the season ahead!
Practices will be Monday/Wednesday after school for about 90mins. We don’t have a track meet schedule yet but will send it to registered families when we get it.
It looks like we’ll have another big team, so we need parent volunteers. If you won’t do it, nudge a friend who would be interested, and get approved via these forms. It takes a couple of weeks sometimes, please start now.
Buckle up, we have plans for team functions and guest speakers, including professional runners! BTW: You can run track AND do non-SPS spring sports like baseball or lax. You CAN do track and be in the musical, etc. Do. Not. Miss. This. Season!
It's a Wrap for Sleep Week
According to SBIRT data, about half of our SPS middle school students and 9th graders are NOT getting the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep. This week, we shared tips in the weekly announcements on how teens can create better sleep habits.
Sleep is indeed crucial for human health and well-being. During sleep, the body undergoes various processes that are essential for physical and mental restoration, including tissue repair, muscle growth, memory consolidation, and hormone regulation. Therefore, ensuring an adequate amount of quality sleep is important for overall health and functioning.
Talk with your teen about good sleep and try some of these tips!

Volunteer to be part of the Eckstein PTSA Budget Committee
We are searching for a couple of volunteers to join the annual PTSA budget committee. This involves just a couple of hours (likely no more than 3 hours) to participate in 1-2 meetings to review and adjust the annual PTSA budget in March/April timeframe. Meetings can be done virtually or in person. Must be a PTSA member as of the time of our meetings. No prior experience required. This is a relatively small budget. (It does not include the Eckstein Annual Campaign.) And a great way to learn more about the work of Eckstein PTSA. Please contact Ann Sonnen for more information. treasurer@ecksteineaglesptsa.org
Opportunities to Volunteer for Families of 7th Graders
These 2 opportunities are specifically for families of 7th graders:
- Ann Sonen volunteered to help the administration plan and organize the Orkila 8th grade trip for next fall. It would be great to have a few more 7th grade parents/guardians who would be interested in supporting the tasks that are required to organize, communicate, and generally support the building in that project. Traveling to Orkila is not a requirement to participate in this.
- There will be opportunities for 7th grade parents to volunteer to support the 8th grade promotion events this year, so that 8th grade parents can focus on the fun (parade, cake, etc.). More details coming soon!
Please email Julia Detering at jrdetering@seattleschools.org if you'd like to volunteer or have any questions.
