PARENT/STUDENT QUESTIONS
Answers to your Parent/Student Questions
My 11th grader has so many interests and it's been challenging to narrow the field so we can look at colleges other than the big 3 (App St, UNC and NCState). Honestly, Naviance seemed to make this even more confusing. How can he assess what his interests are in order to look at smaller colleges that may appeal to him? We are encouraging him to come talk to schools as they come to LNC but he is timid and he says the line can be long. Any advice on how to handle that?
Great question. I understand Naviance can be overwhelming, however it is a great resource. Under College home page, there is College SuperMatch. A student can put in their major, type of school, sports, etc. and it will pop up schools that have the requirements the student is looking for. They can also go into the career section and take the career interest profile which will help list some careers that might be of interest based on how they answered the questions. From there, it will break down from career, to major to college that offers those specific majors. Also, the colleges that are coming to our schools are listed on the students home page of Naviance, all they have to do is register and then show up in the counseling office at that time it shows. We have a lot of our schools that visit and are only speaking with us, the counselors, because the students are not registering to visit with them. I encourage all of our students to take a look on the weekend what schools are coming the following week, do a little google research and if it seems of interest, register.
In the first newsletter you mentioned bordering states with colleges that grant in state tuition to NC residents. Can you name the colleges and what does the student need to do to qualify?
Bordering colleges are now referring to their in-state tuition prices as tuition reduction for those students who qualify. Unfortunately, we cannot list all of the schools as they are all different, but if you look on the specific college's financial aid page, most schools will have their "scholarship" money listed based on GPA and test scores. This is typically a school by school review.
