DAVIES HIGH SCHOOL
EAGLES REPORT - JANUARY 2024
Honor – Integrity – Pursuit of Excellence
Happy New Year to our entire Davies family!
As I sit down to compose this January newsletter, I am reminded of the passage of time and the incredible journey we are on together at Davies High School. It's a time for reflection, marking the midpoint of the school year and allowing us to express gratitude to the many individuals who contribute to our school's success. The sense of pride we all share in our school community is truly inspiring.
Our school stands as a beacon of excellence, thanks to the dedication of our staff, who are unwaveringly committed to the core principle of "Building Relationships, One Student at a Time." It's heartwarming to witness the collective effort of our students and staff in the pursuit of excellence. Together we partner to meet the unique needs and potential that each learner brings. This January Newsletter is always a point of reflection during the school year for me to take great PRIDE in the work that is being done each day by our staff to meet each child exactly where they are at.
As we forge ahead, we remain steadfast in our mission to encourage our students and staff to "Work hard, be Yourself, and Do the Right Thing!" The values of kindness and responsibility are integral to our daily conversations and actions. Each day, I reflect on the fact that Davies High School, with its diverse community, is akin to the 35th largest city in the entire state of North Dakota. Embracing this diversity, we work collaboratively with each student, appreciating the uniqueness they bring.
Currently, we have 1345 students with the support of approximately 175 adults, representing 37 languages and encompassing over 7% English Language Learners, along with nearly 9% of students receiving special education services.

SAVE THE DATE
ALL Junior students will take the ACT on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
Please document this important date on your calendars if you have a junior student.
JUNIORS: This test is FREE to all juniors. Registration for the test is taken care of by Davies High School. Stay tuned for more information as the test date approaches.
We understand that some students may be considering taking the ACT before the state-mandated date on March 26. The decision to do so is entirely up to the individual student and their family! However, fees and registration are the family's responsibility if their student takes the test before March 26 (*See your counselor if you feel you require a fee waiver). Additionally, if you’re wondering whether you can retake the ACT after the state-mandated test, the answer is YES, although it is not mandatory. The ACT is offered on several national test dates at various locations in Fargo. If students do choose to test on a national test date, all registration activities are done on the website at: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/registration.html

CAROLING
Over the holidays, the singers of Davies choir have performed 12 different times! They caroled out in the community at the mall, at many senior living centers, the district office, at Discovery, and several elementary schools in the district! We capped it all off with performances from Vivace, Allegro, 4 Ladies and 4 Gents and the Holiday Special, a combined concert with jazz band and orchestra. It's been a busy and wonderful season!
EDC SOLO BAND OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS
Congratulations to five Davies students who earned Outstanding Performance distinction at the Eastern Dakota Conference Band Solo Festival on December 7 at Valley City State University! More than 500 students from the east side of the state performed solos for the judges.
We also received 14 honorable mention Outstanding performances! These talented folks were the runners-up to the state champion (outstanding performance) award. These individuals were: Evie Geiger, Joshua Dorsam, Anson Chojnacki, Zachary Hemmer, Alexa Ballinger, Hadley Mullins, Gabe Anderson, Callen Perrier, Lucas Selzler, Sarah Meester, Tannis Lee, and Ainsley Hansen.
The festival features five awards: State Star, Regional Star, I, II, and III. Traditionally top 25% earn State Star, the next 25% earn Regional Star, and the other 50% are designated as I, II, and III. Judges also can award one Outstanding Performance per category.

Students learned about the types of fluids in a car and checked the oil level and tire pressure to learn basic maintenance. Lachowitzer discussed repairs that can be made by an owner versus what needs to be done in a shop. He also talked about opportunities for careers in the automotive industry.
NDASC STATE CONFERENCE
Congratulations to Davies junior Flo Sherman on being elected North Dakota Association of Student Councils President at the NDASC State Conference held on December 10-12 in Bismarck.
More than 1,200 students from more than 90 schools attended the conference. Sherman, who serves as Davies Student Body Vice President, was elected president with the campaign slogan, " Don't Limit Yourself, Flo to Your Passion."
NURSES CORNER: PERTUSSIS (WHOOPING COUGH)
Pertussis, or “whooping cough,” is a very contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. It is a vaccine-preventable disease that is usually mild in vaccinated children and adults but can be serious and even fatal in infants. All children attending child care facilities and entering schools are required to submit documentation of vaccination against pertussis.
Note: Bordetella parapertussis is a different disease than pertussis. Parapertussis is often confused for pertussis, by people who receive the diagnosis. Parapertussis is a far milder disease and does not typically require post-exposure prophylaxis of contacts as pertussis does. Parapertussis is not reportable in North Dakota. Parapertussis is not vaccine-preventable. Clinical recommendations for parapertussis patients and contacts should come from the diagnosing health care provider.

INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION
When our winter weather hits, Fargo Public Schools maintains close communication with officials of the U.S. Weather Service, local government, and neighboring school districts in order to make decisions regarding inclement weather and other emergency situations that are in the best interest of the safety of our students, staff and parents. The decision to hold classes is based on the general weather conditions which exist for the majority of Fargo students.
If school is in session, and a parent decides that a student should remain at home due to weather conditions, that decision will be respected by the school. Parents should use their own judgment in determining if the weather is suitable for their children to make the journey to school. It is always up to parents to make the final decision about whether or not to send their student to school if they believe weather conditions present a safety issue. The absence for the day would be considered an excused absence.
If school is called off, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School cancellation information will also be broadcasted via local media, and will be posted across our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
If weather or a situation develops during the day, and it is determined that an early dismissal is in the best interest of the students, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School closure information will also be broadcasted via local media, and the information will be posted on our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
For more information please see the school cancellation process on the Fargo Public Schools website.
EARLY RELEASE DAYS
Fargo Public Schools will release students two hours early from school on February 16 and April 19 to support professional development for teachers.
The early release days allow teachers to gather in an extended Professional Learning Community (PLC) to focus on the students they serve this school year. During these early release days, teachers will analyze data and plan lessons to support students who have yet to grasp current standards and challenge students who have.
The district is committed to providing high-quality education for all students and believes investing in teacher professional development is critical to achieving this goal. By providing teachers with dedicated time to collaborate and learn from one another, Fargo Public Schools is taking an important step toward improving student learning outcomes.
FPS understands that early release days may cause some inconveniences for parents and guardians. However, this is an important step towards improving our teaching practices and benefiting our students' learning outcomes.
Parents are encouraged to contact the school for more information about the early release days and how they will affect their child's schedule. Students will have the opportunity for both breakfast and lunch on the early release days.
