A Message from the Superintendent
Public education in the United States was built on a foundation of local control. In California, the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and its companion Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) exemplify this fundamental democratic concept. Democratically elected school board members work closely with the Superintendent of Schools to ensure funds are equitably and responsibly spent and district officials and schools are held accountable for an annual plan to improve student outcomes. In addition to those primary responsibilities as stewards of the public trust, the Board of Education hires and oversees the Superintendent of Schools. To that end, the Board of Education has retained an executive search firm to conduct the search for my successor and collect your input on developing the superintendent profile. Alvord's next superintendent will take over on July 1, 2024, when I am officially retired, after six years in the role in Alvord. As I wrote in my message last week, I feel blessed and honored to have served the Alvord community.
HOW CAN YOU GIVE INPUT?
This coming Tuesday, November 28, from 6 PM to 7 PM, a community forum will be held at La Sierra High School in the Performing Arts Center. The purpose of the forum is to gather input. There is also a survey that all students, staff, parents, and community members are encouraged to submit. Take the survey in English here or by using the QR code to the right. The survey will close Friday, December 1st at 5 P.M.
Take the survey in Spanish here or by using the QR code to the left. Survey will close Friday, December 1st at 5 P.M.
Visit the Superintendent Search web page here for additional information.

Including Extended-day kindergarten (EDK) and Transitional Kindergarten (TK), which will be universally available and free of cost for all families with children who turn four-years-old by September 1st starting in the 2025–26 school year. We currently offer TK at all of our TK-5 schools are are growing the program as more students become age-eligible.
For 3-year old children, we opened two State Preschool classes this school year, one at Stokoe Elementary and one at Myra Linn Elementary. These classes are open to 3-years old and 4-years old children. We will be opening up another class, at Collett Elementary, in the next few months.
Enrollment for State Preschool for next school year will begin in March, 2024. You can help us determine if we need more sections. Please use the Google Survey link here to let us know if you are interested in enrolling your 3-years old and 4-years old children for the 2024-24 school year.

"KNOW THE SIGNS" WORKSHOP IS TOMORROW
It's important to recognize the warning signs of a mental health disorder. The majority of children and adolescents who attempt suicide usually have a significant mental health disorder, usually depression. Suicide remains the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents, and young adults age 15-to-24. Learn more about the warning signs and what you can do about it by attending a RUHS Know the Signs workshop. See the flyer below for details.

Sign Up for our After School Program
Alvord provides an extension of the school day and school year through its Expanded Learning Program. The focus is on academic, artistic, social, emotional, and physical development for students in elementary and middle school, including middle school sports. The program does not replicate learning activities that take place during the regular school day. Instead, it builds upon them. The program is offered everyday after school, as well as intercession, including summer and extended breaks for holidays. Learn more about it here. Or call (951) 358-1682, Monday - Friday, 9:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
Participate in our Middle School Sports Program
Did you know we offer a full year of middle school sports? We kick off the program with Track and Field just a few days after the school year begins. Specific information regarding clinic and team tryouts will be distributed by each individual middle school site. The link to register to participate in any our middle school sports programs will be sent via Parent Square next week once our registration website goes live. All interested students will need to register and students trying out for any of our competitive teams will need to provide a sports clearance physical form completed by a medical doctor prior to their tryout. Forms can be obtained in the main office of any of our middle schools. Soccer follows the Track & Field season. Other sports include volleyball, flag-football, basketball and pep squad. Make sure your child is registered to participate. The website link is coming soon!
Activate you Parent Square Two-Way Communication
Parent Square is a safe and secure platform for school-to-home and home-to-school communication. All of our schools rely on it to keep parents informed. Instead of a one-way communication tool, Parent Square provides two-way communication. But to fully utilize the two-way feature of Parent Square, you have to activate your account. Sign in here and activate the two-way tool.
