Charger Check-In
February 29, 2024
A Note from Ms. Owens
Today marked the end of our second trimester of the school year and we have so much learning going on at St. Catherine. Our PK students learned about and celebrated Leap Year Day. Our kindergarteners are mastering sight words like "that," "will," "black" and "are." Our first graders will tell you how proud they are that they can count money. Our second graders are learning about the earth's forces like gravity and magnetism. Our third graders have been doing a lot of biographical research. They are learning about so many new people! I've had quite a few fourth graders tell me how confident they are in their ability to do long division. Our fifth graders have been learning about important figures from the Constitutional Era. Our sixth graders are demonstrating their mastery of ratios. Our seventh graders are debating whether Supreme Court justices should be subject to term limits. Our eighth graders are beginning their study of the Holocaust as they prepare to read a play adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank and visit the Illinois Holocaust Museum.
There are volunteer opportunities for both students and adults at the two remaining St. Catherine Fish Frys.
For the past several years, all schools in the Chicago Archdiocese have participated in the 5 Essentials Survey from the University of Chicago. Three core stakeholder groups are asked to respond to this survey: school families, classroom teachers and the student support team, and students in 4th-8th grade. (A parental opt-out form went home in this week's white envelope.) This feedback is a signicant source of information used in crafting our Continuous School Improvement Plan. I'm asking that each school family take the time to complete this survey. Thank you for your partnership.
Our third trimester will begin on Monday, March 4. In accordance with the policy listed in the Parent-Student Handbook, we will pause academic eligibility for the first three weeks of the trimester. The rationale for this is because, at the start of any marking period, a student who misses a single assignment or who earns a low grade on a single assignment can end up with a failing grade.
- We will resume reviewing grades for academic eligibility on Thursday, March 28 (which is Holy Thursday).
- Any students in 4th-8th grades with an F will be notified of their probationary status.
- If that failing grade is still in place on Thursday, April 11, the student will be ineligible to participate in any and all extra-curricular activities until the following Thursday.
A Bit More News...
- The second trimester will end on Thursday, February 29. Report cards and social growth reports will be sent home on Thursday, March 7.

Our Chargers had so much fun kicking off this year's Kids Heart Challenge (KHC) program for the American Heart Association! St. Catherine has set a big goal to be part of the Nation of Lifesavers by getting 50% of our student body to participate. Can we count on you to join us?
Your student will receive this awesome wristband just for joining the SCA team for the KHC program.
