13th Documentary
Permission Slip
Dear Parents and /or Guardians,
Your student is currently enrolled in my U.S. History class. To instruct my history classes I try to use various approaches to convey the true meaning of history to my students. With the assistance of technology and film, the events of history are more than just learned- they are experienced and felt by students.

On 4/24 (evens) & 4/25 (odds) we will be watching the documentary film, 13th. This film explores the impact of the 13th Amendment during the era of reconstruction (just after the Civil War) and the years after. It highlights some of the social inequities that exist in the U.S. and does a great job of explaining the history of the social construct of race in the U.S. This film will give students a first hand perspective of the historical events that we have been discussing in class.
I am requesting that students discuss this film and watch the trailer with their parents/guardians this weekend, as it is intended for mature audiences. There are a few graphic scenes in this film and the content is very moving. There is also a scene that I will skip over as some situations are not appropriate for school settings If you feel that this film is not appropriate for your son or daughter, he/she will not be allowed in the room during viewing and will be given an alternate assignment.
