Wolverine Weekly Update
November 15-19, 2021
Principal's Message
I would like to take the time this week to make sure everyone is aware of what our absence and/or independent study, and make-up work policy is at Sierra Ridge, as stated in our school handbook. We want to make sure students have the opportunity to make up work due to missed school, and parents are clear on our guidelines around school attendance and make-up work.
Attendance
The state Attendance Accounting System under SB727 stipulates that excused absences no longer count toward school funding. Please be sure to assist your child in maintaining exemplary attendance to insure the best possible education for him/her, as well as maximum state funding for school attendance. If a student is absent from school, the absence must be reported by calling the school office on the morning of the absence by 9:30 a.m. The following are the only legal excuses that will be accepted by the office for absences and tardies as outlined in Education Code 48205. NOTE: Family vacations are unexcused unless an Independent Study is granted. (See Independent Study below.)
1. Personal illness (Doctor note required after 3 days)
2. Doctor or dentist appointments
3. Quarantine of the home by a health official
4. Bereavement in immediate family
5. Court appearance
6. Observation of holiday or ceremony in his/her religion
Students with absences over 3 consecutive days will be required to provide a doctor’s note or excuse per section 48205 for the absence to be excused. Please remember that students don’t learn if they are not present in class & on time. 48260 (a) A pupil absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than a 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, shall be classified as a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district. In addition, excessive excused and/or unexcused absences may result in a referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB). Help your student(s) be successful and send them to school.
Early Checkouts
Please arrange for medical and dentist appointments after school hours. Early checkouts from school cause a disruption to the instructional program. If checking out your student early is unavoidable, please come to the school office to sign your student out.
Independent Study
Parents who foresee their student being absent for three or more days may request an Independent Study Contract one week prior to the first day of absence to prevent loss of learning time. The Independent Study Contract must be completed and returned to the office three days after the last day of absence to receive full credit for missed assignments.
Make-up Work
Students are required to make up any work missed due to absence. Upon returning to school, students are responsible for making an appointment with their teachers to obtain make-up assignments and receive any necessary instructions and assistance.
As a minimum, students will be allowed as many days to complete make-up work as they were absent, up to a maximum of four weeks. In case of hardship, a teacher may allow extra days. If students do not complete the make-up assignments by the date due, no credit will be received for the missing work. If absent on the day of a test, students will be expected to take the test on the day they return.
If suspended, students will be allowed to make up the missed work after they return to school.
As always, please reach out to your child's teacher, the office, or myself with any questions about this.
Thank you for your support,
Reagan Phillips
