Pioneer High School Welcomes SNJH Class of 2020!
Sharyland Pioneer High School hosted Shary North Jr. High’s 8th Graders to a campus tour on Thursday, January 28th. The future Class of 2020 gathered at the Auditorium’s General Session and reveled in performances by Drama, Cheer, Belles, Mariachi, Folklorico, and Law Enforcement. Besides the physical tour of the campus buildings and observing classrooms as they walked by, the 8th Graders were welcomed by a gym-full of club and organization booths ready to sign them up. The choir group sang melodies to lure students to their table while the Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country athletes tempted with banners and shouts! Thirty-two clubs, organizations, and athletic groups participated in the PHS Club Fair, donating team t-shirts and prizes to motivate the students to join their organization! The 8th Graders had plenty of time to gather information, ask questions, and sign up. Master of Ceremonies JJ Lopez kept the momentum going with the Diamondback chant and anecdotes, while the students viewed a Club & Organization presentation projected on the wall as they walked around the gym. The 8th Grade teachers and counselors expressed their thanks for the event, stating that the 8th Graders felt welcomed and were ready to join the Diamondback Nation!

Title: Maze Runner
Author: James Dashner
Published: August 2010
Edition Read: E-Book borrowed from McAllen Library
Series: The Maze Runner Series
Grade Level Recommended: Upper Level (6 grade and up)
Summary: Thomas wakes up in complete darkness, trapped in an elevator, and without any memory of who he is or why he’s there. He ascends into a world of at least 50 boys who have lived in “the Glad” for the last two years. Thomas quickly learns that order is the method of survival. All the boys have a job, and those jobs keep them alive. Thomas finds that he’s been dropped into the middle of a maze, seemingly unsolvable, and one that changes once the doors of the maze close every night. Thomas feels that the maze is eerily familiar, but doesn’t tell anyone without understanding what it means. When a comatose girl arrives just one day after Thomas everything he’s learned about his world begins to change.
Maze Runner has some excellent and thrilling scenes. Dashner writes a very intriguing and fast-paced book about using your mind and skills to survive. Although the writing is a little redundant, the story more than makes up it. Thomas is a leader, and a fighter. He chooses not to give up despite how desperate his circumstances may be. The ending and epilogue made me want pick up the next book. This series is once that I hope continues to be as intriguing as it was in this first book.
