The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: Immigration
Essential Question: Why do people immigrate to new places?
Next week our class will be focusing on why people immigrate to new places. Immigration is an important part of our country’s history. We will continue to develop our understanding of figurative language and how authors use idioms, similes, metaphors, and hyperbole (exaggeration) to make their writing more interesting.

Homecoming Spirit
Thank you for your amazing participation in the "Dancin' Through the Decades" homecoming spirit week this past week. It was big, big fun for all. We know it takes extra effort from home on these types of days, but it certainly makes for fun memories! Be sure to check out some of the fun photos below. Additional fun themed days that are planned for October (please also see below).
On fifties day, students in my math class took a typical short grocery list and did some comparative pricing from a current Kroger advertisement with those prices from a genuine grocery ad from the 1950's. Can you imagine their shock to learn that a pound of bacon was only $0.78 back then?!?! It was entertaining for them to do addition and subtraction with regrouping using a genuine scenario...that just happened to tie in with one of their fun-themed days.
Johnny Appleseed a.k.a. John Chapman
Thursday was John Chapman's birthday; you know him as Johnny Appleseed. We've read several accounts of his life that, according to the Indiana Academic Social Studies Standards "distinguish between fact and fiction in historical accounts by comparing documentary sources on historical figures and events with fictional characters and events in stories."
Book Buddies
On Tuesday, we were introduced to our book buddies from Mrs. McCashland's first grade class. It is oh-so-rewarding to observe the nurturing side of these third graders as they interact as role models for the younger students.
Be Drug and Bully-Free
We are taking a different approach to Red Ribbon Week this year. In recognition of Bully Prevention Month and Red Ribbon Week, we are encouraging our faculty and students to participate in the activities scheduled each Tuesday throughout the month of October. We will be focusing on making healthy choices and pledging to live drug and bully-free lives.
Tuesday, Oct. 3- I'm a "Jean-ius"--Be a Buddy, Not a Bully
- Blue Out--everyone wear BLUE.
- Wear your boots and western clothing.
- Wear your favorite team jersey or shirt
- Dress as your favorite Super Hero
- Everyone wear (school appropriate) Halloween costumes
Next Week's Share Topic
My Favorite Book When I Was Little: Choose a book that you loved when you were little. Who read it to you most often? You may bring in the book and retell the story or read it to the class. If you don’t have the book anymore, you may draw a picture of a part of the book.
Scholastic Book Fair
Mrs. Grissom, our school librarian, is planning an exciting book fair October 2nd-6th. This is an opportunity for students and their families to purchase low cost books. Students will be visiting this coming Monday at 9:30 a.m. and again during their regularly scheduled library time (Fridays at 2:00 p.m.). Parents, you are more than welcome to meet your child at the library if you choose to shop at that time, or you can just send money if you wish for your child to purchase. Look for more detailed information in your child's Friday folder.
PTO T-shirt Sizes
We'd like to thank the LES PTO for providing a T-shirt for every student in our school. If you've not yet returned the form that lists your child's shirt size, please do so as soon as possible so that the proper shirt can be ordered for your child.
Box Tops for Education
We wish to thank those of you've who've sent in Box Tops already. The first submission for the year will be on November 1st, so please send any that you might have accumulated before that time. The Box Tops do not need to be affixed to a piece of paper. Feel free to send in an envelope or Ziploc bag. We do so appreciate the efforts you make on our behalf toward this worthwhile fundraising effort!
