SPOTLIGHT SESSION
National Poetry Month
Presented by Old Jail Art Center
Grades: 3-5

Celebrate National Poetry Month this April! Explore Acrostic, Haiku, and Shape poetry through an artistic investigation. This is an excellent opportunity to connect language arts and visual thinking strategies in your classroom. Using sensory details and descriptive wording, students will compose three poems inspired by works of art in the museum collection. Each student will create a tri-fold poetry booklet, complete with their own compositions and images from the museum collection.

Listen, Discuss, and Create!
This programming is based on Bently & Egg, by William Joyce. Bently Hopperton is a young frog with an artistic temperament. When his friend Kack Kack asks him to watch her egg, disaster happens! Luckily, Bently Hopperton comes to the rescue. The book will be read together during the class and participants will talk about egg decorating, do a little problem solving, and create stick puppets.
Pysanky: Spring Egg Decoration

Celebrate the arrival of Spring and learn the traditional art of Pysanky, Ukrainian egg decoration. Students will read Rechenka’s Eggs and discover connections between illustrations by author/artist Patricia Polacco and artworks from the Old Jail Art Center’s Collection.
Each student will design his or her own egg in Ukrainian style, using geometric and organic designs. This project will include a review of 2D versus 3D forms as well as the division of shapes into halves and fourths.
Backyard Bunnies

The rabbit or bunny is an easily recognizable mammal that many people associate with springtime. During this program, you will get to see a live domestic rabbit while we discuss its wild counterparts. We will explore their adaptations and body structures, the different species of rabbits in Texas, and their habitats and ecological benefit as well as the differences between rabbits and hares.

Striped Skunks

Meet the striped skunk. Although its defense behaviors and adaptations are benefits in its wild environment, these same behaviors do not fare well in urban habitats. Most people cannot help but turn up their noses when they think about skunks; however, after our class, you will understand their ecological benefit.

Peregrine Falcons

Birds of prey, also known as raptors, are a common sight in the skies. During the program, we will take an up-close look at a live Peregrine Falcon to discuss the important body structures and their functions. We will investigate the falcon’s diet, their role in the food web, the habitats in which they are found, and the adaptations that allow them to be such powerful predators and fast fliers.
