Indian Mythology: A Three-Part Series
Indian Mythology
by: Siri Tanvi
The most famous mythological story from India is Mahabharata [muh·haa·baa·ruh·tuh] this article will give you a sneak peek into the story. Mahabharata is a book versed by Vyasa maharshi, written by Lord Ganesh. It tells the tales of the great war that happened way before. The main characters of the book are Pandavas (they were total of 5) & the first 3 Kauravas (they were total 100). And the god Krishna being the “puppeteer,” of the total story. After the story it said that the Earth was born again to form us humans. It is not found in the library. If you want to read or understand, you need to know Sanskrit or hindi. You can buy it on Amazon in english. It is a story about how an injustice to the wife of Pandavas led to the battle between these 105 brothers. It is a really good story that teaches life lessons and morals, how people behave and what kind of mindset people have. It is beautifully written and crafted by Vyasa Maharshi in the period between 400 BCE – c. 400 CE. This is the oldest recorded vedas before ‘Kali Yuga’. So this is the Mythology for today. Just the sneak peak. The story is about to begin….
The Tiktok Gen-Z-ration
By: Sanvi Budiraja and Ananya Vanchiselvakumar
Whether you love it, hate it, or feel indifferent about it, there is no denying that social media has become ingrained in all of our lives. After all, we rely on it for practically everything from keeping in touch with friends, to shopping, to educational purposes. More often than not, many people’s first instinct when they get free time is to scroll through their instagram or tiktok feed to see what’s going on in the world right now. The question is, is this constant and increasing usage of social media, particularly in young people, a good or bad thing?
Most popular social media apps for young people
Some of the most popular social media platforms for young people are Youtube, followed by Tiktok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. So how much time does the typical teen or pre- teen spend everya day on social media? According to the New York Times, ”On average, daily screen use went up among tweens (ages 8 to 12) to five hours and 33 minutes from four hours and 44 minutes, and to eight hours and 39 minutes from seven hours and 22 minutes for teens (ages 13 to 18).”This amount is a 17% increase from 2019 to 2021.
Positive and Negative Effects of Social media Usage
I’m sure anyone who uses social media has recently noticed a trend with short videos becoming extremelyvery popular. Well, this can be credited to TikTok which thanks to itsit’s insane popularity especially among the youth. This has led to other popular social media platforms such as Youtube and Instagram trying to replicate itsit’s setup. So, how can these seemingly fun, harmless short videos have a negative effect on us, specifically our attention spans? Well, according to many new studies that have been conducted recently, the way a Tiktok video or a short is designed is so that it automatically catches your attention and gives you a quick dopamine boost. Dopamine is the chemical released in your brain that gives you a happy, pleasurable feeling. It’s the chemical that makes you feel rewarded for something. This constant exposure to quick, meaningless short videos that simply give you that quick dopamine hitboost can be bad for your memory, concentration, and attention span in the long run. However, not everything about social media is necessarily a bad thing. There are many positive and educational ways to use social media such as for voicing your concern on things, staying connected with people and building friendships, and educating yourself on pretty much any topic in the world.
As you can see, social media, whether good or bad, is still up for debate, but there is no denying that we are certainly living in a digital age.
Olympic Swimmer Stories: Katie Ledecky
By: Tae Young-Kim
Who is Katie Ledecky?
Kathleen Genevieve Katie Ledecky was born on March 17, 1997 in Bethesda, Maryland. She began swimming competitively at the age of six, along with her older brother, Micheal. Her influence came from her mother, a former collegiate (belonging to a college) swimmer, and a hospital director. Her father, David, was a lawyer. With her passion for swimming, she became a valuable player at the Nation’s Capital Swim Club in 2011. She was instructed under the coach, Yuri Suguiyama. Suguiyama instructed Ledecky to kick more aggressively during races, seen a lot by men, but not by women.
Olympic Achievements
2012 London Games
After getting into the U.S olympic swim team at the age of 15, she won the 800 meter event and became the youngest member of the team. At the 2012 London games, Katie paced her heat (the group of swimmers who swim a race at the same time) in the 800 meter. She broke 23 year old Janet Evan’s American record of 8 minutes and 14 seconds to win gold. After the race, Ledecky said something that a person with huge confidence would say. “I knew if I put my mind to it, I could do it,” she said. “I wasn’t intimidated at all.”
2016 Rio Olympic Games
Ledecky did not do terribly at all in Rio. In her first event- women’s 400 meter freestyle, she won gold. In her team’s 4x100 meter relay, she helped her team win silver. She won gold again in her 200 meter freestyle event, but came really close with Swedish swimmer, Sarah Sjostrom, who won silver. “I did come pretty close to throwing up during that last 50,” Ledecky said. “I knew I just needed to get my hand on the wall and be done. Everything was hurting …I just had to dig deep and do my own thing. I had no idea whether I touched first …I was done when I touched the wall. I knew I’d given it everything I had to.”
2021 Tokyo Olympics
Due to the pandemic, the Summer olympics of 2020 got forwarded to 2021. Katie Ledecky’s events were 800m freestyle- gold, 4x200 freestyle relay-silver, 1500m (that’s about a whole mile of swimming!)freestyle-gold, 200m freestyle-fifth, 400m freestyle-silver.
More Swimmer Achievements
Ledecky showed that her 2012 olympics was only the start of the show. She continued setting world records in 800 meter and 1500 meter freestyles. She won four gold medals at the 2014 Pan Swimming Championships, and at the 2015 FINA world Championships, she became the first woman to win the 200,400,800, and 1500 meter freestyles in a very important competition. She became the honorable swimmer as the FINA swimmer of the year, and three-time Golden Goggle Female Athlete of the Year, and the USOC’s Olympic SportsWoman of the Year.
The excellent swimmer got into Standford University with her graduation from Stone Ridge in 2015. She wanted to focus on her training for the 2016 swimmer olympics though. Katie was in top form before her Olympic competition, she set another world record in her 800m freestyle with 8:06.68 at the Arena Pro Series in 2016. Then, Ledecky went into the 2016 Rio Olympics being the world record holder in the 400 meter and 1500 meter freestyles. Being the amazing swimmer she already is, she was expected to add to her extraordinary collection of gold medals and become one of America’s most appreciated Olympic athletes.

What is Photography?
By: Sneha Donepudi and Darek Wu
As a dictionary definition, photography is the art, application, and practice of creating images by recording light sensors or chemically. Photography itself has multiple uses, it is a job, helps capture reference photos for artists, and is used to make film and video production. In addition to this, photography is also great for recreational purposes and hobbies. Typically, the way capturing a photo works is a lens is used to focus the light reflected or emitted from the object being photographed into a real image. With an electronic image sensor, it produces an electrical charge at each pixel. The result with photographic emulsion, a light sensitive colloid consisting of crystals in gelatin, is an image "developed" into a visible image. This photo can be either negative or positive, depending on the purpose of the photo. A negative image captured on film is traditionally used to create a positive image on a paper base by contact printing. Contact printing is a fancy way to say a photo developed from film.
Now here’s a few tips if you want to get into photography, with a handheld camera or with a phone. First of all, you will want to hold your camera correctly. Put your left hand under the lens to support its weight, and your right hand gripping the side of the camera in order to keep it steady and not shaky. You also want to stand correctly. In other words, lean against a wall, or kneel so that there’s less shake in the camera. If you can’t do any of these for whatever reason, try to have a wider stance. Now that you can hold your camera more properly, try to have objects in your photo in thirds, like so. This will allow your photos to generally be more interesting to look at, and more pleasing to the eye.
The Fall of Among Us
Calling all Crewmates and Impostors!
By: Jemie Chow and Parinitha Hadya
Do you remember Among Us? That “murder mystery” game in a spaceship with tiny customizable astronauts? There must have been a point that the name reached your ears. When was the last time you played it? Have you ever wondered what happened to the pandemic ruling online game? The page you’re about to read is about what happened to the game that once dominated the gaming community, so step aboard the airship and prepare for takeoff.
Among Us was created by a company called InnerSloth. InnerSloth is an incredibly small company that accepted its 5th member as of early 2021. The game was first released in 2018, June for mobile players and August for those on PC. Even 6 months after it was released, the game only had an average of 8 players. This went on for 2 years, until the big change arrived.
In June of 2020, the game managed to get over 500 players. Among us finally got some attention when Twitch streamers discovered the game. By September 2020, the Twitch category averaged an astonishing 204,000 views and 3500 concurrent streams. This, however, wouldn’t last for very long.
As the months passed by following September 2020, Among Us’s statistics have been going down drastically. In January 2021, its average views had dropped to 42000, 20% of what it had been before. In addition, average streams dropped to only 88. As Among Us’ popularity on Twitch died down due to no longer being ‘new and exciting’, its player count was dragged down with it. While having 151,000 players in September 2020, it dropped to 42,000 by January.
Several other factors also lead to Among Us becoming less relevant. A reason for this is a common factor in many games, whether it's on a game board or screen: Most players do the same thing as other players do on a game, without realizing it. Among Us is a simple game, and as time went on, the behavior of crewmates and impostors became more apparent, and that lessened the tension the game once had. Another factor contributing to this is COVID. Quarantining and lockdown led to more people getting on online games and entertainment. Once some of those restrictions were lifted, people began to go outside and visit friends more. In other words, the COVID pandemic was carrying Among Us’ popularity.
Among Us was popular enough that it had to have reached your ears at some point. It’s hard to believe that as quickly as its popularity increased, it decreased. As time goes on, Among Us will likely continue to fade away, as it already reached the peak of its mountain. Perhaps in the future, a new game will take shape, this time keeping the popularity Among Us had for a brief time period. In the meantime, we can sit back and think of back in the day, when the fad we all know was still up and running.

Is Elon Musk Destroying Twitter?
By Nihar Joshi
On October 27th, 2022, Elon Musk bought Twitter. Since then, extreme changes have been made around the world to Twitter’s rules. Many believe that this is the downfall of Twitter, and that Elon Musk made a grave mistake. Some think that Twitter may be entering a new golden age. Despite people’s opinions, one thing is clear: The future of Twitter is at stake. A few issues and the whole company could come crashing down. Elon Musk’s decision to buy twitter may haunt him forever. However, it could also further increase the wealth of the world’s richest person.
What is Twitter?
According to Britannica, Twitter is an “online microblogging service that distributes short messages of no more than 280 characters—called tweets—and that was influential in shaping politics and culture in the early 21st century. A user types a tweet and sends it to Twitter’s server, which relays it to a list of other users (known as followers) who have signed up to receive the sender’s messages. In addition, users can elect to track specific topics by clicking on hashtags (e.g., #movies), creating a dialogue of sorts and pushing the number of followers in a given Twitter feed into the millions.”
Who is Elon Musk?
According to Wikipedia, “Elon Reeve Musk FRS . . . is a business magnate and investor. He is the founder, CEO and chief engineer of SpaceX; angel investor, CEO and product architect of Tesla, Inc.; founder of The Boring Company; co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI; president of the Musk Foundation; and owner and CEO of Twitter, Inc. With an estimated net worth of around $181 billion as of November 18, 2022 . . . Musk is the wealthiest person in the world . . .”.
Elon Musk’s Changes to Twitter
Elon Musk has been wreaking havoc on the company ever since he bought it. Twitter employees are struggling to meet his strict and unrealistic deadlines. According to Two Weeks of Chaos: Inside Elon Musk's Takeover of Twitter, “The 51-year-old barreled in with ideas about how the social media service should operate, but with no comprehensive plan to execute them . . . Twitter, which is under financial pressure from debt and a slumping economy, is now unrecognizable compared with what it was a month ago. Last week, Mr. Musk slashed 50 percent of the company’s 7,500 employees. Executive resignations have continued. Misinformation proliferated on the platform during Tuesday’s midterm elections. A key project to expand revenue from subscriptions hit snags. Some advertisers have been aghast.”.
Elon Musk has been firing employees who have criticized him. He has been doubling down on outside vendors, instructing staff to renegotiate or even stop paying them. Hundreds of workers have already resigned due to Elon Musk’s harsh tactics. Nobody is sure if the company can survive much longer like this. Elon Musk also knows this. Lately, he has come to the realization that he actually needed some of the people he fired. However, even after reaching out to them, barely any of the former employees returned to Twitter.
Additionally, Elon Musk fundamentally changed Twitter’s verification method used for big companies or celebrities. Instead of having to get enough followers to get verified, you can pay $8 a month to get verified instead. Immediately, people on the internet started impersonating huge companies, Tweeting distasteful messages. Chaos ensued.
The Future of Twitter
With all of the chaos surrounding Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, what lies in store for the company? Well, according to The future of Twitter: Four scenarios from Brookings, there are four possible outcomes. Listed below are three out of the four possible outcomes. Keep in mind that there is still a small chance that Elon Musk could save Twitter from the fiery mess it is in now.
Bankruptcy: A major part of Twitter’s revenues come from advertisements. Seeing as how many advertisers stopped advertising when Elon Musk took control of Twitter, the future of the company could be leaning towards bankruptcy. Twitter already has unpaid bills, and is currently in debt.
Little Content Moderation & Lots of Extremism: According to Brookings, “Musk has been upfront about his interest in promoting free speech and allowing a broader range of content on the site. As a sign of his commitment to that perspective, he has brought Donald Trump, Kathy Griffin, Babylon Bee, and Jordan Peterson back on the platform. Each had been suspended for different reasons ranging from incendiary rhetoric and impersonations to transphobic commentary. While laudable from a pure free speech perspective, these decisions along with a possible deemphasis of content moderation likely could mean greater toxicity and extremism on the social media site. According to Axios, only 60 of the 560 people (or 11%) responsible for content moderation are still on the Twitter staff.”
Technical Problems in Maintaining the Site: As of right now, there are many technical issues within the company. When Elon Musk fired around half of the company’s workforce, he fired people that were extremely important to Twitter’s survival. He fired experienced employees who managed the tech side of Twitter. That leads to the current situation, where Elon Musk is desperately trying to get those employees back. Nobody else really knows how to fix the system and use it to help run the company.
In conclusion, Twitter is facing a dark road ahead of it. Entering new territory, the company is working hard to get things back on track. While extremely difficult, it can still be done. However, if things continue to go wrong, the company could come crashing down. Elon Musk has to play his cards right in order for Twitter to survive. He knows that. Will he stop making reckless decisions? Or will the company go down in flames? Only time will tell.

The Ukraine War
By: Arav Raman
On the morning of February 24th 2022, Russia decided to invade neighboring Ukraine on a “special military operation” for the “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine. Russian President Vladmir Putin’s announcement came after nearly 190,000 troops were already stationed along the Russia-Ukrainian border. Many think that President Putin got scared because Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy started talking about joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Back in 1949, NATO was created with the goal of preventing the Soviet Union from expanding and taking over more European territory. Once the Soviet Union fell, the U.S stated that NATO wouldn’t expand west. Now, NATO comprises 30 countries including many European nations. President Putin was afraid that if Ukraine were to join NATO, then it could have significant influence over Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin for 90 minutes on Tuesday March 29, 2022. The French President stated that in said call, President Putin agreed to not attack civilians. After this statement, a bomb hit a train station in Ukraine that was full of people trying to flee. Russia claims that it wasn’t their fault, but that the Ukrainian military had fired on its own country. After recovering from the initial shock, Ukraine started mobilizing their army and even started to call on citizens to help fight the ongoing battle. Thanks to this, Ukraine has reclaimed most of the land stolen from them, such as the capital city of Kyiv and the infamous Chernobyl.
As of November 8th, 7.8 million Ukrainians fled their homeland and spread out across Europe. They have gone to Poland, Moldova, Romania, believe it or not, Russia. Most Ukrainian refugees have gone to Russia (about 2.9 million) with Poland in a distant second (about 1.5 million).
Alongside these Ukrainian civilians, people all over the world have also been impacted greatly. Prices for everything have been significantly higher ever since the war began. We have seen soaring prices for the food we eat, the clothes we buy, and the gas we use to fuel our vehicles. The United States imports some of its oil from Russia, and some of its ferrous metals and agricultural products from Ukraine. Amid the raging war, there is not a lot of time for Russia to export much, and Ukraine could not export anything. This lack of resources is sending these prices skyrocketing, causing U.S. citizens to just have to pay the extra cost so they can have necessities.
While many countries from all over the world have pitched in to help Ukraine, the U.S is their biggest supporter. President Biden has approved billions of dollars to go towards anti-aircraft and stinger missiles, helicopters, firearms, millions of ammunition packs, and much more. Just under nine months have passed since the first attacks on innocent Ukrainian people. Let’s just hope that this ends quickly and safely. For their sake, and ours.

British Politics: The Ups, Downs, Ins, and Outs
By: Silas
Recently, politics in the United Kingdom have been turned upside down with the resignation of Liz Truss from and the appointment of Rishi Sunak to the position of Prime Minister. How did all of this happen? How did things escalate so quickly? Continue reading this article to find out.
Firstly, what caused Liz Truss to become the Prime Minister? Well, it was the resignation of Boris Johnson. He had been called upon ever since last year to resign due to him supposedly breaking his own rules during the COVID pandemic. Over the summer, he eventually submitted and decided to resign from the Prime Ministership. This triggered an election within the Conservative Party in the U.K. for their new party leader, who would in turn become the new Prime Minister. The race was close, and in the end Liz Truss narrowly beat Rishi Sunak. Truss was officially appointed the position of Prime Minister only two days before Queen Elizabeth died, and after everything regarding the Queen’s death was taken care of, Truss began making plans for what she called a “Mini Budget.”
Liz Truss’ “Mini Budget” was a huge flop, both for the British economy, and Truss’ popularity. The British Pound’s value dropped, and many businesses left the U.K, and in the turmoil some began calling for Liz Truss to resign. For the next few weeks, Truss attempted to correct herself and get her government back on track. Firstly, she sacked and replaced her finance minister. Secondly, only a few weeks after implementing it, Truss announced that she would remove the “Mini Budget.” This did not help at all however, and on October 20th, Truss resigned. Many people brought up the fact that lettuce generally lasts longer than the length of Truss’ prime ministership.
Following Truss’ resignation, a new leadership election was to take place within the Conservative Party. The immediate front-runner was Rishi Sunak, the son of an Indian industrialist, and someone who did fairly well in the leadership election after Boris Johnson resigned. Some people thought that Boris Johnson would actually try to become the Prime Minister again, but only a few days into the process, Johnson said he would not run in the election. Many other candidates dropped out as well, which opened the path for Rishi Sunak to become Prime Minister. On October 25th, Sunak met with King Charles and officially became Prime Minister.
In his first week as Prime Minister, Sunak re-instituted a ban on fracking in the U.K, and repealed all of the economic changes that Liz Truss had made during her tenure. There is no telling what the exact future for British politics will be, as the next election will be no later than the end of next year, but Rishi Sunak can set it to be earlier. There is also no telling if Rishi Sunak will be able to salvage the Conservative Party’s popularity.
SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Winter Season at NMS
By Nihar Joshi & Udita Jutur
Novi Middle School is preparing for the winter season, and everything that comes with it. From sports to special events, our school is certainly very busy in winter. This article contains information about sports and activities to help prepare you for whatever you want to take part in at NMS this winter.
Fall Sports Report
NMS students and staff were asked to share their thoughts on how fall sports went. Here is what they had to say about their experiences this fall.
Saksham Patel, a student in 8th grade, told us this: “Fall sports have gone amazing. Speaking from experience. I had been on the NMS soccer team as one of the captains this year. Games were awesome and practices had been none less of an amusement. Being in a fall sport like soccer would've really kept you active and fit. Playing in the soccer games would give you a different perspective of how competitive soccer would be played. Practices were super fun. Having many different drills, they would all be fun. Laughter would constantly be something that would happen in any sport played at Novi Middle School. This year in 8th grade, the soccer season was even more amazing. Having our team have 9 wins out of 11 games, we were one of the best in the conference/division. When making them, you may not know everyone but that unknowing of someone would go away in a day. Everyone has fun with everyone and the coach has fun with everyone letting us do scrimmages and other fun activities. Other fall sports such as football, volleyball, and cross country have also been really fun. Having many friends do each of these sports, I can say that fall sports have gone amazing for everyone who has done it and I recommend . . . fall sports next year if you are a 7th grader or if you're going into high school next year.”
Winter Sports
At NMS, there are many sports during the winter season. Winter sports are separated into two categories, winter 1 and winter 2. Winter sports include:
WINTER 1:
Boys Basketball (7th and 8th grade)
Competitive Cheer

Boys basketball, competitive cheer, and pompon all take place during winter 1, the first half of the winter season at NMS. Girls basketball, swim and dive, and wrestling all take place during winter 2, the second half of winter. Boys basketball tryouts were in early November. If you are interested in basketball, there’s always next year (even if you’re going into high school)!

Epic “football” news
Recently, the country of Qatar has been hosting the World Cup. Many of our students have been following this football event, and there has been twice as much excitement bustling in the building. The world cup this year has featured so many defeats so far, including Saudi Arabia’s victory over Argentina, and Germany’s loss to Japan. Many disappointing results have included ties, such as the US and Wales match, as well as the Uruguay and South Korea match, and Poland and Spain, with many other matches. Excitement is building for the US and Iran football match. This world cup has featured many surprising results, with Qatar being the only host country to lose the opening match, and the fastest host to be eliminated. Many of our students were also shocked by the elimination of South Korea, who lost to Ghana before they got eliminated. In college football, many students were satisfied when the University of Michigan held the Ohio State Buckeyes at bay. The Wolverines claimed OSU’s spot on the rankings, who were bumped off to #5. Many play-off positions are at stake, with TCU and USC trying to hold their spots against Alabama and Ohio State, two big superpowers in college football.
