Our Highlights: What We've Been Rockin' At!
What a fabulous first week! We learned and grasped a lot of routines! We have been really beginning to look like second graders! Rock Stars shared how they want their classroom to look, sound, and feel like. Expectations are so much more valued when they come from the students! We have had some great discussions about what it means to be respectful to one another in our class. One of our biggest areas to work on is tracking the speaker. We have been working hard to look at the speaker when they are talking (and the entire time they are talking). This is a sign of respect, a sign of listening, and a crucial skill in society. Please reinforce this much-needed skill at home by having them look at you when you are speaking to them (it's great practice at the dinner table!).
We also learned about level D: Democracy (which is based on when people do the right thing because it's the right thing to do, without having to be asked or reminded). We discussed things that they might do at school or at home acting on Level D, like brushing their teeth all on their own without even having to be reminded by their parents, or helping someone on the playground because they noticed that the person needs help, or even picking up a pencil on the ground (even if it wasn't theirs) because they know that it's the right thing to do.
We have also been getting to know each other. We have played games, shared about ourselves, and really started to build a community in our room. It has been such an amazing first week! I can't wait until next week! There are some questions near the bottom of the news to keep the conversation going with your Rock Star! Feel free to try them out with your Rock Star!

Reminders
You can help your Rock Star be most successful by...
- Checking their Rock Star Blue Folder every night and making sure it is packed in their backpack every morning
- Packing a snack for morning recess and afternoon recess (to limit those "hangry" moments as they get back in the schedule of school)
- Packing a water bottle to have inside the class (especially helpful on these hot days!)
- Helping them gets lots of sleep (this might even mean having them go to bed earlier than usual if you are noticing they are tired when they get home).
- Contacting me if you have any questions. We are in this together and I am here for you and your Rock Star!
Questions to ask your child...
- What was your favorite thing you did last week?
- Who do you sit next to?
- Who were your lunch buddies throughout the week?
- What is your big goal for the year?
- What is Level D? What does it mean? What does it look like?
