March 2019
Spring has Sprung
March was an incredibly busy month here at MVMS. There were many great academic and extra-curricular activities going. Thank you to all of the innovative teachers and dedicated club advisors for providing so many fantastic opportunities for our students. We hope you enjoy a quick peek into some of this month's activities. Enjoy!
Making it Work SPCA Visit
Engineering Week
This year we celebrated National Engineering Week at MVMS! We had guest engineers come and speak from Nobis Group. The students asked great questions and had an opportunity to learn what it was like to have a career as an engineer. We also had the NH Bomb Squad Robot visit the 8th grade students. The students got to see the robot in action and learn about some of the jobs it has been a part of. Another fun activity for the week was when the students in Mr. Ginty's and Mrs. Herrmann's classes competed to build the furthest traveling cable car. The students really got to think like engineers! It was a great week!
Kindness Rocks!
Earlier this school year, our 7th grade students designed and created Kindness Rocks. The Kindness Rocks Project that we participated in is part of a nationwide initiative to cultivate connections within communities and lift others up through simple acts of kindness. Some of these rocks were given out at our Kindness Cafe in January. This month we had the opportunity to visit the Merrimack County Nursing Home and share more of our Kindness Rocks. A small group of 7th grade students and a few staff members made a visit there. Students were able to visit with a number of residents and even had the opportunity to participate in some activities together. Students really enjoyed their time there and especially enjoyed making new connections.

Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week
During the week of March 11th, all students in grades 6-8 had an extra focus on being kind to others. We began on Monday by talking about why kindness is important, the science behind it, and that the positive effects that kindness provides to not only the giver and the receiver--but also those around who observe the act of kindness. We discussed how all of this can effect our school climate in a very powerful and positive way.
Students had the opportunity to perform at least one act of kindness during the week to be part of the challenge. When acts of kindness were done, they were written on paper leaves which were added to our Kindness Tree. Students were able to see the tree “grow” as more and more leaves were added during the week. By the end of the week, over 500 acts of kindness had been done. We will be celebrating our accomplishment as a school with a school-wide ice cream social. Students and staff are encouraged to continue the momentum that this week began.

Destination Imagination
The Destination Imagination Team competed in the Eastern Regional Tournament in Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday, March 16th. They worked hard preparing for their central challenge, including researching medical conditions and using their findings to create a performance centered around a medical mystery. They were required to include a “Symptomatic“ to diagnose symptoms as well double vision in their solution. They also did a great job on their instant challenge, which they knew nothing about until that day.
Harlem Wizards
MVMS was lucky to have Miles from the Wizards stop by to promote the event and go through a few tricks with some of our students. We are looking forward to a great time on April 12th. There will surely be no shortage of laughs, fun, trick hoops, and alley oops!
