The Wildcat Report
The Newsletter of Marcellus Elementary - January 2020
News from the Office
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope that you had an enjoyable winter break. The holidays are a wonderful time to spend time with family and make memories.
As we head into the next couple of weeks, we will be wrapping up the first semester of the 2019-2020 school year on January 24, 2020. The students will start taking mid-year benchmark assessments. These assessments help us to monitor student progress as compared normed benchmarks. I for one am anxious to see the progress our students have made. Our staff uses this data to adjust intervention groups that occur daily.
We would like to welcome to our instructional team Ms. Michelle Marvin. As you know, we have had a substitute in our art classroom all year. We are switching the format of that class and it will now be an exploratory class, where the topics covered will change through out the year. Ms. Marvin has a degree in Elementary Education and a strong background in nutrition. She will start teaching the Michigan Health Curriculum in her room. Please welcome her if you see her.
It is essential to the success of our students that they are consistently at school ready to learn and they are consistently returning their assigned homework. If home and school join, we can make an effective team working toward the academic success of our students. One way you can support the academic success of your child is to read to them daily and/or have them read independently. Below is an info graphic on the importance of reading at home for just 20 minutes a day.
STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP
In order to improve the safety of our students as they arrive and leave from school, I am forming a committee to look at different options to improve our processes. I understand this has been an ongoing issue for many years and I hope that we can create a plan that eases the process for parents/guardians, while maintaining safety and security for our students. If you are interested in joining this committee, please email me at tracy.spaulding@marcelluscs.org.
We have had several instances of vehicles backing out of the parking lot on the east end of the building (by the Kindergarten rooms) into the pathway of the buses. This is a huge safety concern and despite talking to parents, it continues to be an issue. Therefore, we ask that you do not park in the east lot to drop off your student.
Student Drop-Off
- Park in the parking lot and escort your child to the cross walk. It can be quite dark in the morning, so I have ordered a lighted stop sign and will have an adult outside daily to use it at the walk cross (as soon as it arrives).
- If you choose to drive through the drop off lane, please stay in the right-hand lane (nearest the sidewalk) and pull-up to drop off you student(s).
- If you have multiple students, have them exit at the same spot, do not make multiple stops along the way.
- Students must exit the vehicle on the sidewalk side of the vehicle.
- It only takes a couple minutes for the lane to move, so please do not try to cut into the lane from the left lane.
- Exit the drop off lane using the left lane. There should never be students exiting cars in the left lane.
DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE along the drop-off lane, including down by the Kindergarten wing of the building.
Student Pick-Up
- Park in the parking lot and walk up to greet your student. Utilize the cross walk to walk back to the parking lot.
Thank you for your understanding and patience and we develop a plan that allows for a quick and smooth drop-off and pick-off.
