American Political Parties
Where did they come from? What are they now?
Party Beginings
Despite George Washington's warnings against them, political parties developed almost immediately after the U.S. became a democracy. In fact, the first two major political figures cam from Washington's closest circle of advisors. The first two political parties to be found in the U.S, were the Federalist Party, and the Democratic-Republican Party. The Federalist, led by Alexander Hamilton, were for a large central government. The Democratic-Republicans (Anit-Federalists), led by James Madison, they took the opposite stance.
Where are parties now?
Now there are two major political parties, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. These two parties are defined by their stance on a number of issues. The Republican Party believes in a small government, limited taxation, and a general idea of more self sustainability. However the Democratic Party believes in a large, more socialistic government, progressive taxation, and the idea of a more entitlement oriented way of life.
