Problem-Solving at the Team Level
We utilize our grade-level team meetings every Tuesday for a variety of purposes.
- Review the calendar and upcoming events.
- Ensure effective communication practices among staff, adminstrtaion, students and parents.
- Review dates for tests, quizzes, projects in an attempt to avoid having too much for our students all at once.
- Examine student concerns and problem solve student issues.
- Utilize the time to plan for 10th-period success, including SEL lessons.
Recently, I found an article, "Solving Student Problems as a Community," published in Edutopia, May 16, 2016. I chose to highlight this article because the structure discussed closely matches the McClure model, and it affirms that we are engaging in a successful practice. After observing our team time for the past ten weeks, it is clear that we are on the right track. I hope that we can use the attached article and summary to reflect on our current practices, to fine-tune our team meetings, and collaboratively improve our school. Our goal is to prevent student failure, as our school community is designed to help Ss before a situation becomes too dire.
Summary of the Article:
- Be sure to have at least a grade-level collaborative plan time. (Check)
- Frequent, transparent communication among staff who work with the same students is the foundation of team problem-solving. (Mostly check)
- Create an agenda to maintain focus. (Check)
- Student issues should be stated clearly with the following: date, concern, actions, the person responsible. (Mostly check)
- Set dates to re-visit previous Ss concerns in order to check on progress and make notes of progress/regression. (Needs work)
- Understand that some problems can be solved quickly and others take more time. (Check)
- Look for opportunities to involve Ss in the problem-solving process. (Some growth needed)
Opportunities:
- Menu of Interventions/Solution Options
- Teen Court-Peer Mediation
- Incorporate Ss in the process
- Follow up on the progress or regression
