Valentine's Day Template
February 14, 2024
From the Principal
January was a crazy month, but we made it through! We had SEVERAL snow days and late start days, temperatures dipped to as low as -25, and by the end of the month it was nearly 60 degrees! Our staff has been working diligently to get back into a groove with students despite all of the interruptions-- courtesy of Mother Nature. As of today, I'm proud to report that our winter iReady testing is complete, and I'm excited to dive into the results with our teachers to see how much our students have grown. After that, teachers will share results with families during parent teacher conferences. If you haven't shared your availability for parent teacher conferences, you can do that here.
February is a jam-packed month: Valentines' parties, our book fair, Trivia Night, and more. There's a lot of useful information in the sections that follow, so please be sure to keep this newsletter handy.
Thanks, as always, for your continued and unwavering support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Simmons, Principal
MMEA Concert Update from Mrs. Dexheimer
On January 23rd, the Fairview Songbirds took the stage at the Missouri Music Educators Conference. They worked their tail feathers off for 5 long months to prepare for this music Super Bowl, and I’m biased, but I think they CRUSHED IT!!
The Songbirds showed up with a clear understanding of their assignment: Have fun, be joyful, and take pride in their music making! They met all 3 goals!
Music education is a journey. The learning process is more important than the outcome and it isn’t always glamorous, but when the outcome turns out to be an experience that touches lives, it is an accomplishment to be celebrated. I believe these kids touched many lives yesterday, and THEY deserve to be celebrated. I am overwhelmed with pride and gratitude for these children!

Monthly Update from Specials Teachers
From the Music Room
A HUGE congratulations to the 4th and 5th grade Songbirds! They performed at the Missouri Music Educators Conference on January 23, and they were Outstanding! Their joy was contagious, and I have no doubt that the impact of their performance will ripple throughout elementary music classrooms around the entire state of Missouri. Congratulations to our Songbirds!
In the music room, we’ve been singing, dancing, and playing instruments. 4th-5th grade have been focusing on recorder playing. 2nd-3rd grade have been playing a lot of unpitched instruments, and K-1st have been exploring songs about snow and ice! Ms. Frankenbach, our Mizzou student teacher has settled in quite nicely. She has begun teaching a few lessons and is outstanding!
Counselor News:
February is always such a busy and fun month for us in the counseling department!
First, we are celebrating National School Counseling Week. The theme this year is “Standards-Based, Student-Focused.” I am grateful for the comprehensive program we are able to implement that allows us to proactively teach social, emotional, academic, and career readiness skills and reactively help students strengthen those skills to be successful learners.
Here is what students will be learning about in their counselor classes in February:
Kindergarten: Finishing Problem Solving/Conflict Resolution
1st grade: Growth mindset
2nd grade: Growth mindset, Listening
3rd grade: Multiple Intelligences (Positive self-concept, Growth mindset)
4th grade: Coping strategies, Time management
5th grade: Social Filters, Respectfulness
As always, if there are ways our counseling team can support your student or family, please let us know!

Dress up days for Counseling week
We also celebrate our annual Kindness Week in February! Students will hear announcements each day, teachers will have supplemental lessons/activities/resources to address kindness in their classrooms if they choose, and we will have some school-wide opportunities to focus on the ways we can spread kindness to others. Here is an outline of the spirit days that will help us celebrate this fun week:
From the Media Center
Reading is SNOW much fun! Hope the students have had a chance to snuggle up and read while they were stuck at home. In younger grades, we have highlight books about winter – snow, outdoor activities, cold-weather animals and more, as we continue discussions on fiction and non-fiction. Older grades have had opportunities to browse shelves to find books they have never seen. 4th and 5th graders have just over a month to continue reading Mark Twain Award nominees – they can vote if they have read four of the titles. Most grades are looking at biographies currently. The students are enjoying the variety of new books that are arriving in the library – many are from the book fair we had in November – or bought with profit from the bookfair. We look forward to the next book fair at the end of February!
From the Gym
Hello Fairview Families!
With all grade levels we’re finishing up our basketball and ball skills units. 3-5 has been playing Hot Spot, One and Done and Target Ball. K-2 has been working in stations, playing Angry Birds, Critter Toss and Asteroids and Spaceships. Ask your kids what we’ve been up to!
Thank you to everyone who was able to come out to CoMo Rocks!
We are inching closer to the purchase of the rock wall!!
Fingers crossed….install occurs over Spring Break.
Please check the A,B,C,D schedule and continue wearing tennis shoes. This has been a huge problem with some kiddos lately due to all the snow days. Help them be prepared!
Last, but not least, a MASSIVE shout out to Mrs. Dexheimer and the Song Birds!! The word on the street is they rocked their show at MMEA!! I am very proud of all of them.
Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wright
Technology Specials
In technology specials we have been exploring all the different data bases in Electronic Library that can be used for research projects, Pebble Go, Pebble Go Next, World Book Kids & Culturegrams. We are now beginning to explore our topics and choose what we will be researching. 4th and 5th will choose a country they feel would be a good vacation destination and present their findings in Keynote and Google Slides. 2nd & 3rd will choose their own topic to research, take notes and make their presentation in Keynote, while K & 1st will start by using Clips to make a presentation about themselves. Be sure to ask your children about the apps they are using and what they are doing for their presentation. I am sure they would be happy to share!

From the Art Room
In art class students are learning about clay. Almost every class has watched a short video describing where clay comes from, how and why people use clay and the processes their project will go through before they can take it home. Classes have had a play day where they get to explore different building techniques and just create with clay, however at the end of this class students turn their work into a pancake so we can reuse the clay for their project! Please reach out with any questions lrobb@cpsk12.org

Winter Weather
Winter is here, so please dress your child accordingly. During this time of the year it is hard to predict the weather, so dressing in layers is always a great idea. Our students go outdoors for recess unless the "feels like" temperature drops below 20 degrees.
Winter Weather Reminders
- Check the school district website at http://www.cpsk12.org.
- Tune in to CPS-TV on Mediacom 81, CenturyLink 97 or Charter 985 or view lived and on-demand streaming on the CPS-TV Web site at https://www.cpsk12.org/cpstv. CPS-TV is also available on Roku, AppleTV and FireTV.
- Download the free CPS mobile app on iTunes or GooglePlay. Search for Columbia Public Schools (link: http://www.cpsk12mo.org/App ).
Help With Cell Phones
Student cell phones have started becoming more of an issue in classrooms and at school. Please make sure to remind your student that if they bring a cell phone to school, it needs to remain on silent and in their backpacks. Students may not have cell phones on them and may not use them at any time during the school day. if students need to contact parents, we will ask that they do this from the school phones.
