COVID
I imagine you are tired and the present situation is testing your agility, but as the great basketball player and coach, John Wooden said: failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be. It’s bumpy right now, but I believe as 2022 unfolds, it’s our ability to adapt and roll with the punches that will see us through.
Well done to our families for the excellent response to the law change from today where students from years 3-12 must wear a mask while at school.
The safety and wellbeing of all students and staff is our highest priority and as WA (Western Australia) is now considered to be in a high caseload setting, we need to remain vigilant and monitor for symptoms. If your child is unwell, they should not attend school and if anyone in your household displays any of the COVID-19 symptoms they should seek testing immediately, notify us and isolate until a negative result is received. Please notify us immediately of a positive test result. Please note that these results will be confidential. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to keeping our community safe.
Always contact me if you have any concerns regarding COVID issues.
Ash Wednesday
We were unable to attend church for Ash Wednesday Mass. However, class prayer liturgies took place in individual classrooms. Fr Ian provided the school with Ashes that were distributed by class teachers. The liturgies were absolutely beautiful to be a part of.
The Lenten Season is a time of preparation and penance in the 40 days prior to Easter. The children, during their religious Education classes, will not only discuss what Lent is about, but will also observe the Lenten Season by choosing activities such as giving up lollies or chocolate or giving something of themselves by helping around the house or donating to Project Compassion.
Ukraine Peace Vigil
Mrs Amie Meyer, Mrs Jane King, our Year 6 leaders and the school band were outstanding ambassadors for our school when they presented the prayerful peace vigil for all those currently suffering in the Ukraine. Alexandra Youlden’s speech was one of the most moving that I have ever experienced. Well done to the staff and families and local that were able to attend.
Change of family Details
At this stage our swimming sports are postponed till later in the year.
Please let us know at school if your family address or phone numbers have changed.
Kindy Enrolments 2023
Just a reminder for parents to enroll your Kindy students ASAP. They are required to turn four years of age before June 30, 2023.
Long, long weekend
Our Professional Learning Day on Tuesday 6th March we will be learning more about supporting students with anxiety.
School Uniforms
Please be conscious of dressing your children in the correct school uniform.
Black leather upper shoes for boys and hair being trimmed above the collar or have the hair tied back. Neat well-groomed hair does assist with the decrease in spread of headlice.

Support For your children
Monika Armstrong is working with our staff to introduce high level and effective brain breaks for our students at OLC after school on Tuesday 15 March.
If you think your child may benefit from more support out of school hours please feel free to contact Monika at Naturaliste Chiro & Physio 9756 7888.
Monika is particularly passionate about children’s health and aiding them to achieve their optimal potential. She offers the Well Balanced Child program which serves children with behavioral, social and academic dysfunctions through a technique developed by Dr Robert Melillo. In order for the brain to function normally, the activities in the right and the left hemispheres must work in harmony. Through a series of tests a child's symptoms and functional activities are assessed, giving a picture of which functions within each hemisphere are out of balance. A series of daily sensory, physical, and academic exercises are then selected that target the troubled areas and restore balanced functionality.
· Chiropractor for over 10 years
· Received her bachelor degrees at Murdoch University
· Received Postgraduate diploma in Paediatrics (chiro) in 2017
· Working at Naturaliste Chiro and Physio
· Currently studying functional neurology with Dr Robert Melillo
· Interested to know more, call the clinic to make a free appointment with Monika to discuss the program

RE NEWS
Making Jesus Real
Nothing inspires hope in the future of our world than seeing our students think beyond themselves. This fortnight I have been overwhelmed by the thoughts and actions of many students, who have initiated their own fundraising efforts for various causes.
Our Year 6 Leadership team have been amazing in their commitment to hosting the vigil for Ukraine, and in coming up with ideas to raise money. They created face masks with the Ukrainian flag, sold tea lights, sunflower seeds and sewn facemasks at the vigil, and raised $150 on the night. Amazing!
Our Year 5’s also used their initiative to fundraise $88.40, with a group of students selling hand made items at recess and lunch. They asked that the money raised be distributed between three major causes – Heart Kids, Project Compassion, and the shipping of donated items to Timor Leste. Wonderful stuff!
A big thank you to the whole OLC community for the amazing response to the call for donations to go to Timor Leste. We were overwhelmed by your generosity and look forward to the items being collected tomorrow in readiness for shipping to Timor Leste in the next month.
Finally, we have another student led initiative, with Matlida in 6H asking for donations of empty glass jars with lids for her next fundraiser. If you can help out, please deliver your jars to 6H or the front office.
Thank you to one and all. Mrs Amie Meyer.
Year 4 First Eucharist
Currently our Year 4 students are being prepared by their teachers to receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist (or First Holy Communion) at the end of the term. Take a look at this short video if you would like to understand more about the First Eucharist:
HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN UKRAINE
There are a number of OLC families with Ukrainian heritage in our community. Nataliya Youlden, mum to Alexandra and Sophia, left Ukraine 12 years ago to move to Australia to settle. A number of Nataliya’s family and friends remain in Ukraine and are currently facing desperate times. If you are able to provide financial assistance, Nataliya will be establishing a Go Fund Me page where donations will be dispersed directly to people on the ground in need. Details will be shared soon.
Alternatively, if you can support the following humanitarian causes for the larger population of Ukraine, it would be appreciated. Please continue to pray for Ukraine and for world peace at this time.

News from the Community School Health Nurse
A note from the Community School Health Nurse
Welcome to the new school year
Hello. I’d like to introduce myself and my role. My name is Jill Rogers and I am the Community School Health Nurse for your school this year. School Health Nurses work with schools to promote healthy development and physical and emotional wellbeing. We are a good contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessments, health counselling, parenting support and referrals as needed. The service is free and confidential.
I am part of the Healthy Country Kids Child Development Team, alongside other School Health Nurses and Allied Health professionals, such as Speech therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dietetion, Social Worker and an Enuresis Nurse.
In response to increasing cases of COVID-19 in WA communities, services to schools will very likely be disrupted in 2022 and will be delivered according to priorities, and in negotiation with School and Health leaders.
If you have any concerns about your child’s physical or emotional health and well-being, or growth and development, please contact me on 97536475 or email WACHS-SW.NaturalistePrimarySchoolNurses@health.wa.gov.au

Anxiety – how to help your child
At a time where Covid is consuming our thoughts, and changing frequently, anxiety in children can be a concern.
All children experience anxious feelings as part of their normal childhood development. Some anxious feelings include fear, agitation, nervousness, worry and apprehension. Some children find it harder to get these feelings under control and may experience anxiety more intensely and more often than others.
Anxiety is when the level of fear or worry about something is out of proportion to the level of risk or danger. Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense.
If your child is experiencing anxiety try to:
• Acknowledge your child’s fear – don’t dismiss or ignore it.
• Gently encourage them to do things they’re anxious about, but don’t push them to face situations they’re not yet ready to face.
• Wait until they actually get anxious before you step in to help
• Praise him for doing something they’re anxious about, rather than criticising them for being afraid.
• Avoid labelling your child as ‘shy’ or ‘anxious’.
Your child might need some extra support if their anxiety stops them from doing the things they want to do or interferes with their friendships, school work or family life.
If you are worried about your child, contact your School Health Nurse (97536475) , School psychologist or GP.
