Indirect and Direct characterization examples:
“He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man’s” (Hurst pg.1).
Indirect Characterization of Brother:
“… so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow” (Hurst pg.1).
Definitions:
Indirect Characterization - it the opposite. This is when the author provides clues about a character by describing what a character looks like, does, and says, as well as how the other characters react.
Question:
Brother’s regret was pushing doodle too hard to try to be normal. In Scarlet Ibis, brother says, “I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy” (Hurst pg. 6). This statement makes Brother realize that pushing Doodle too far for too long beat him down to his breaking point.
