State School Superintendent Richard Woods selects 2017-2018 Student Advisory Council
State School Superintendent Richard Woods has selected 142 Georgia students to serve on his 2017-2018 Student Advisory Council. Throughout the school year, these middle and high school students will meet with Superintendent Woods to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom. Members of the Student Advisory Council will also discuss other issues related to education, serve as the Superintendent’s ambassadors to their respective schools, and participate in service projects to benefit schools and students.
“Every year, it is so valuable to hear directly from students through my Student Advisory Council,” Superintendent Woods said. “In the past, we have made direct changes based on student feedback, and I look forward to working with these 142 students who I know will make an impact. I’m so grateful for every student who took the time to apply and share their thoughts.”
Members were selected from a pool of more than 1,500 students who applied to serve on the council. Students were chosen based on the strength of their essay answers, which focused on their ideas for public education as well as their community service experience. The students selected attend public schools all over the state.
After School Reminder
We need your help. In recent days, students have been on campus after hours, not as a part of a school-sponsored event.
Please remind your children that they should not be on school property after hours if they are not affiliated with groups being sponsored and supervised by staff.
SOS- Signs of Suicide Program ( 7th grade only)
Dear Parent or Guardian:
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficult for youths, their parent, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which treatable—is leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth. To proactively address these issues, Fulton County Schools is offering suicide prevention lesson through Signs of Suicide Prevention Program.
Our SOS program goals are as follows:
• To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
• To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential risk of suicide in a friend
• To impress upon students they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to responsible adult about their concerns
These sessions will be conducted through our Science classes or another appropriate class on Friday, October 13, 2017 . If you DO NOT wish for your child to participate in the SOS suicide prevention lesson at school, please print and sign the parent letter from link below or pick up a form in front office. If we DO NOT hear from you by the following date: Tuesday, October 10, 2017 , we will assume your child has permission to participate in this program. If you have any questions or concerns about this program please do not hesitate to contact your local School Counseling Department.
Sincerely,
The Counseling Team

Digital Awareness for Parents
REACH Georgia Nominees
REACH Georgia is a mentorship and scholarship program that provides scholars with the academic, social, and financial support needed to graduate from high school, gain access to college and achieve post-secondary success. Upon successful completion of the program, qualifying 8th grade students earn a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500/year for up to four years) towards educational costs at a University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia institution or an eligible private postsecondary institution. The top five nominees for Taylor Road MS are: David Castillo, Victor Dobrinski, Juan Gomez, Fei Hao, and Daniel Laij. This is a fantastic opportunity for students, because each year only 8 students are selected for the cohort of REACH scholars.
