Students Love STEAM Night
District 103 children were excited and engaged during the Learning Fund Foundation STEAM Conference that took place on Wednesday. The foundation’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (STEAM) event provided 180 students the opportunity to participate in activities such as exploring the invisible world of electricity and magnetism, learning about the physics of catapults, building video games, and creating obstacle courses for Sphero robots.
"We at the Learning Fund Foundation are committed to offering authentic and engaging hands-on learning experiences to our students," said Michele Schaapveld, President of the Learning Fund Foundation. "Our goal is for the students to leave feeling inspired to pursue a career in a STEAM field," she said. Please visit the D103 Facebook page for pictures of the event.
The Foundation thanks its conference sponsors. Please visit the Foundation website for a list of sponsors. The PTO Camp and Adventure Fair was well attended by parents and offered them information about local summer camps and programs. Please visit the PTO's website for more on the camp representatives.
Registration Open for Girls on the Run
This spring Half Day School will offer an extra-curricular activity for third- through fifth-grade girls: Girls on the Run (GOTR). GOTR is a non-profit, national program that inspires girls to be healthy and confident by using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.
Sessions will be held after school on Mondays from 3:40 to 5:00 p.m. and before school on Friday mornings from 7:30 to 8:40 a.m. Girls must make a commitment to allot two days per week to the program.
The season will begin on Monday, March 9, 2020, and it will conclude on Friday, May 22, 2020. (No program on 3/23, and 3/27)
The GOTR culminating 5k race will take place at the end of the season (late May/early June, TBA). The team will also participate in the D103 PTO's Run for D103 (scheduled for Saturday, May 9).
Cost of the program is $205 which includes a t-shirt, water bottle and GOTR 5k race registration.
The spots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis through the registration process. Register online using the GOTR link or visit http://www.gotrchicago.org and follow the link for registration. Be sure to choose Half Day School as the site.

Make Your Voice Count
Only 9 percent of Half Day parents have responded to the Illinois 5Essentials Survey that the district has sent out. We need a 20 percent response rate in order to read the results. Please consider participating in the school climate and learning conditions survey. This 10-minute survey is a great way for D103 parents to provide input into the five indicators from the survey that affect and predict school success:
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
Community
