News From Mrs. Abele & Ms. Kaempffe
It is hard to believe that we are already in May! This is a busy time of year for you as families and for the staff of State Road as well. This time of year for us is the “cross road” where we take care of what needs to be done to finish the year, while simultaneously planning for next year.
Budget Vote is May 21st - The annual school budget vote and Board of Education election will be held on Tuesday, May 21st. Polls will be open between 6 am and 9 pm in the Webster Schroeder High School gymnasium, 875 Ridge Road. The proposed budget will continue to support all school programs; academics, fine arts, athletics, special education, and extra-curricular programs. Every vote is important!
Dress Code - With the warmer weather, we would like to remind you of components of our school dress codes. Your child’s footwear needs to be safe for the activity involved. As an example, playing basketball at recess with flip flops would not be appropriate. We also want to ensure that undergarments are covered including shoulder straps. Please review these components below (taken from our school handbook) when planning your child’s school attire:
1. Include footwear at all times. Footwear that is a safety hazard will not be allowed.
2. Ensure that undergarments and midriff are completely covered with outer clothing.
3. Recognize that as one matures physically, brief garments such as tube tops and spaghetti straps are not appropriate.
Reminder about Bus Loop Parking - Please do not park in the bus loop during school hours. This is especially important between the hours of 8:00-9:30AM and 2:00 – 3:30 PM. Thank you!
Here are our April Golden Eagle Recipients! Way to go Eagles!
Ride for Missing Children
On May 17th, the bike riders participating in the Ride for Missing Children will be riding by our school. The scheduled time for their arrival at State Road is 1:19.
I think the riders have ridden by State Road before so for those who have not experienced the event, here are some of the guidelines:
-We will assemble all of the classes on the bus loop probably starting 1:05 to ensure that everyone is in place before the riders arrive at 1:19. (The riders are usually pretty much on time.).
-It will be great if students could make signs to cheer on the riders and just provide the riders lots of cheering as they ride by.
Here is a link to the website if you would like to check it out.

It is a super fun event and I am excited that State Road is one of the schools on their route.
Author Joseph Bruchac visiting State Road on May 14th!
Much of Mr. Bruchac’s writing draws on Native American culture and history, particularly his own Abenaki Indian ancestry, as well as the Adirondack foothills where he lives. He and his family work on projects to preserve Abenaki culture, language and traditional Native skills. Joseph Bruchac is truly a special writer and human being and we can’t wait to meet him!
Ask your child about the stories by Mr. Bruchac we have been sharing in library and read one together! They are marvelous!
If your child ordered a book, they will be given to students on May 15th, after Mr. Bruchac has autographed them. If you own a book by Mr. Bruchac or purchased one on your own, your child is welcome to bring it in for an autograph. PLEASE have them bring the book to the library BEFORE May 14th.
5th Grade Battle of the Books Competition!
Spring is here………
And so is Allergy Season
Spring/Summer allergies can cause itchy, scratchy throats, eye irritation, sneezing etc.
If your child suffers from Spring/Summer allergies and takes antihistamines or any over the counter medications for comfort, you can provide these medications to the Health office with a physician’s order so that your child may continue to be comfortable while in school.
Students will be outside too so……...
With spring comes mud, you should consider packing extra clothing during the muddy rainy time.
The Health office has SOME clothes when emergencies occur, but if we do not have clothes to fit your child and they are unable to go to class due to muddy wet clothes, we may be calling you.
Sun Protection
The Webster Central School District Policy allows for student to have parent apply Sun screen.
The Health office is unable to APPLY sunscreen to your child during the day. If you want your child to be protected from sun exposure, you will need to apply sunscreen before they attend school.
Lips are almost always exposed to the elements so lips can get dry, sore, and irritated any time of year. A good lip balm/Vaseline can buffer delicate lip skin from the elements.

Fairy Day is also May 16th!
Second grade is busy with our Plant\Animal Interdependence unit. We have planted our Wisconsin Fast plants and are expecting our butterfly larvae to arrive soon. The children will observe the 40-day life-cycle of the plants (from seed to seed) and also witness the metamorphosis of Painted Lady larvae in to delicate butterflies. This unit is cross-curricular and highly engaging!
Also this May, we will be going on a field trip to the Shoremont Water Treatment Facility. We’ll be touring the plant and learn about how water is treated and delivered to our homes.
Mrs. Peters' second grade used Google Expedition to go inside a beehive, as well as visit Ancient Greece.

We have several vacancies on our committee for next school year, including our Building Chair/co-chair position. It is essential that we fill the chair/co-chair position before the end of the school year. If we do not have a building chair/co-chair, our PTSA and our children and families will feel the impact. If you would like information about the job, please e-mail me (gloriasantoli@gmail.com) and I will answer any and all questions you may have.
