Homework (optional):
If your student needs or would like additional practice on the topics we are working on in class, I will be assigning online homework practice. This is completely optional, but will greatly benefit your child if they complete it, as the online practice provides immediate feedback and guidance. Homework will typically be available on Monday and will be due the following Monday. For this week, I have assigned 2 lessons, and these will be due on Tuesday.

Fact Fluency:
As we head into more complex 5th grade topics, it is extremely beneficial for students to have fact fluency. There are numerous apps and websites to help build this skill as well as good old flashcards. Please work with your student daily on building this essential skill. Students are assessed every Friday until they meet 100% fluency.
ELA
This week we completed our running records for 1st quarter. This is such an enjoyable time for me because I can listen to each child read and have some really good conversations. I learn a lot about the students just from these conferences. Next week we will be taking our Fall STAR assessment. This along with the students' running record will give me a good indication of where your child is entering fifth grade at. Please contact me if you have any questions about their scores after next Friday.
In class we are covering making an inference using fiction text. With this unit we are focusing on completing strong, thorough answers to show support and explain their thinking. The model we are using is referred to as RACE. This means restate question, answer question, cite evidence, and explain thinking. This takes awhile for the kids to get used to and will take most of the year to master. We will expect this type of answer all year throughout all subjects.
For writing, they will continue practicing creating strong paragraphs using topic sentence and many supporting details. Paragraph structure is very important to perfect to be able to advance in our larger writing pieces. The entire first quarter is focused on free writing and sharing of many types of writing.
For homework, the kids will have a nightly requirement of reading for 30 minutes. Your child will have an AR goal set by middle September. To meet that goal, your child will have to read consistently and as expected. Please help them to be responsible and take the time needed to complete this homework expectation.
Science
Social Studies
For social studies, your child will continue learning about map skills and geography. We are covering relative and absolute location next week and then combining all we have learned to fill in maps and create imaginative map projects. After map skills, we will begin geography. The kids will learn state and capital location, region location, hemispheres, continents and oceans. A couple of good resources you can encourage are the website sheppardsoftware.com and an app called Stack the States. Both are fun and can encourage memorization.
