Schools to Careers: Health & Medical Seminar
Last Thursday, February 4th, twenty-five of our Blue Hills Health Assisting students (our 20 sophomores, plus five of our seniors) participated in the Schools to Careers Health & Medical Seminar, which took place at Canton High School. Among other area high schools attending were Milton, Dedham, and Canton. The purpose of this seminar was to impress upon the students that continued growth within the health care and medical fields is offering unlimited opportunity for every type of student health-related interest.
The keynote speakers included Mr. Tim Quigley, RN, MBA, Chief Nursing Officer at South Shore Hospital and Dr. Matthew H. Lowry, MD, MBA, Vice President of Medical Affairs, and Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician, Steward Norwood Hospital. Each of these speakers was both engaging and motivating, as they traced their own often non-linear educational and career paths towards the realization of their professional aspirations-- to make a positive impacts in the lives of others through a life of service within the health/medical field. They each offered pertinent and timely advice regarding such matters as college course/major choices, honest self-reflection of one’s goals and abilities, achieving solid grades, and the gaining of health-care related experience through such modalities as internships and externships.
Following the keynote addresses, our students attended each of two panels, the first along with 25 students form another high school, and the second just themselves. The first panel included representatives from nursing, radiology, and other allied health areas who told about their own careers and paths of preparation they took towards these careers, what they each learned from their own journeys that could make navigating vocational waters easier for the our current generation of students, and responded to such questions as, “What has been your worst day on the job?” and “What has been your best day on the job?”
The second panel was made up of representatives from the Curry College nursing program. After the panel presented on nursing careers in general and nursing-via-Curry College in particular, a lively Q/A session took place, during which several important questions on topics ranging from college requirements, the importance of high school performance, and financial aid were discussed.
Student feedback on this event was very positive across the board: not only did they believe it was very useful and informative, but they appreciated being regarded by the speakers and panelists as “future collaborators” within the health care field.
There is a place for students of every level in the health & medical fields. Come to this seminar to find out for yourself connecting with health & medical professionals from leading Boston area institutions including keynote presenters: Tim Quigley, RN MBA Chief Nursing Officer at South Shore Hospital and Matthew H. Lowry, MD MBA Vice President of Medical Affairs Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician Steward Norwood Hospital.
The health care and medical fields continue to grow offering unlimited opportunity for every type of student Invited to present to the students are a wide variety of health care professionals including nurses, pharmacy, laboratory, therapies (PT/OT/Repertory), radiology EMT, CNA, PA and other allied health areas.
