Fourth Graders Visited LMS!
This was the first of many transition activities. Fifth grade ambassadors and Mr. Richards will be visiting each fourth grade classroom at VES to answer any lingering questions that student may have. Fifth grade orientation for parents will be held at LMS on April 19th at 6:30.
To top it all off, all fourth graders are invited to a "Moving Up" party, which will be held at LMS on June 2nd. There, students will have a chance to get the lay of the LMS land!

It's Time for Spring Break!
PARCC at VES
Village Elementary School will be administering the “Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers” (PARCC) assessment between April 19th and May 8th. Fourth graders will be testing from April 19th through April 28th (seven days, excluding Take Your Child to Work Day) and third graders will be testing from May 1st through May 8th (seven days). The assessment will consist of four units of Mathematics and three units of Language Arts.
Classes not taking the PARCC assessments on a particular week will be able to have a full academic schedule and all students will have full-length related arts classes. Related arts classes may, however, take place at a different time.
Our teachers have been preparing Village School students for the PARCC assessments all year through their every day, Common Core based instruction. This includes reading, writing and math experiences using Chromebooks and practice with the PARCC test format. Students have also been trying out the accessibility features during Technology class. All VES students have Ready Test A-Z as an add-on to their Raz-Kids account. Parents can work at home with their children on this PARCC-like tutorial, and students have been using it here in school, as well.
As we did last year, we plan to create a positive, low-stress testing environment. Our goal is to help our students to feel confident in their abilities and relaxed during testing.
As they have for the entire year, our students will need to have their own pair of ear buds or inexpensive headphones for use during the entire PARCC testing period. Most children do have them, but we would like to remind you ahead of time.
If you have any questions, please refer to MTSD's PARCC page for more information:

As always, we are thankful for your continued support!
Famous Visitors!
The third graders enjoyed meeting Suzy Kline, author of the Horrible Harry and Herbie Jones book series. Our third graders are well-read when it comes to Suzy Kline! She shared many tidbits of writing advice with our students and suggested that everyone carry a notebook with them!
Fourth graders met Ralph Fletcher, author of Fig Pudding and Flying Solo, along with many picture books and nonfiction books about writing. He helped them to see that tidbits from their ordinary lives can be infused into the writing that they do. Most students had read at least one of his books and were excited to learn the back stories to his characters.
Many thanks to our amazing PTA who made it possible to have these amazing authors visit us here, at VES!
