Boise High Insights
3rd Quarter
From the desk of the principal - Robb Thompson
Dear Boise High Families:
I hope you are well and have had the opportunity to recover from the “snowpocalypse” that brought us an unprecedented seven days of cancelled school. It is hard to believe that we are already well into the 3rd quarter with the Boise Brave Parent Gala (Saturday, March 11th), Boise School District Bond Election (Tuesday, March 14th), and Spring Break (March 27th – March 31st) just around the corner.
As we approach the final grading period of the school year, we begin looking forward to next year. Our Open House for incoming sophomores was held on February 7th, with excellent participation from prospective students and their parents. It looks like most of the 510 currently registered 10th grade students took advantage of the opportunity to learn a little more about Boise High.
Most of our seniors are well on their way to completing the last of their college applications, making gap year plans, or putting together a plan for life and learning after graduation from Boise High School. On Tuesday of next week we will take our annual senior picture on the front steps of the main building. This is always was a fun event.
The winter athletics season is wrapping up with great results for all teams. Our Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team has had a great season thus far and will be playing Friday, February 24th for the district tournament championship. We are happy to announce that the Boys’ Varsity Team will be returning to the State Tournament for the first time since 1997. Way to go Braves! And our Wrestling Team has a number of student-athletes who will compete in the state wrestling tournament this weekend. The Lady Braves Basketball Team fought hard all season and came up just a bit short in the District Tournament. But they made us very proud in the process! All of our teams had great season this winter and gave us much to look forward to for next year. We are quite proud of the excellent sportsmanship and competitive spirit with which all of our student athletes and coaches conducted themselves. Congratulations to all who participated, cheered, and continue to enjoy the winter season.
The month of April will be a busy time for our sophomores, who will be taking the State Science Assessment in either Biology or Chemistry (students may choose). The ISAT 2 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. The specific testing dates for ELA CAT (Computer Adaptive Test), ELA Performance Task, Math CAT and Math Performance Task have not been set just yet but will take place during the month of April. We will send out specific information as we develop the schedules. Also in April, our juniors will be taking the school day SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) on Tuesday, April 11th.
Another big event coming to Boise High is our Be The Change Summit. The date for the Summit is Wednesday, March 22nd. This will be a regular, full day of school. This is a student and teacher planned, student led project based learning opportunity for all students and staff members. We are very optimistic that the summit will positively impact our community regarding opportunities to make positive change. Our students have been working diligently to put together informative and engaging lessons with a fun and learning filled day for all. We are extremely proud of the work our students, particularly the AVID 11 class, have done with this project based learning experience.
On Friday, April 28th we will have our annual “Heart of the Brave Assembly.” The Heart of the Brave Award celebrates the positive characteristics displayed by Boise High students on a daily basis in regards to academics, music, the arts, activities, athletics and community contributions; recognizing those students who live and lead by example, be it quiet or vocal. Some of the characteristics these students display are integrity, excellence, dedication, respect, dignity, responsibility, honesty, teamwork, courage, kindness, compassion, perseverance, and empowerment – to name a few. More information regarding the specifics of the Heart of the Brave Assembly will follow in the coming weeks.
Lastly, I would like to share some data with you regarding current academic performance of Boise High School 10th and 11th grade students on the PSAT, which was taken in October of this school year. We have much to celebrate; 76% of BHS sophomores met benchmark standards (college preparedness) in English, Reading, and Writing, while 64% met the Math standards. The junior class had 80% meet the English, Reading and Writing benchmark, with 61% doing so in Math. These numbers are significantly higher than District, State and National averages for the same age groups. Have a wonderful weekend and Go Braves!
Respectfully,
Robb Thompson

BOISE HIGH TO BENEFIT FROM BOND
On Tuesday, March 14, 2017 the Boise School District will hold a bond election to reinvest in our neighborhood schools and community with no increase in the current property tax rate.
For Boise High School, passage of the bond will address the following:
- Boise High’s Old Gym - built in 1936, is outdated and has become an obstacle to properly delivering academic, athletic and performing arts education.
- Music and Performing Arts - spaces also need revitalization and expansion where possible to provide optimal environments for learning.
- Ranking last among high schools on all three major 2016 Facilities Audit categories (Utilization, Educational Adequacy and the Facilities Condition Index), a complete remodel of Boise High’s Old Gym, plus the addition and improvement of performing arts classrooms, will bring one of Boise High’s oldest building up to safe, modern standards ($15,300,000.00).
- Boise High’s ongoing maintenance needs include paint, fire safety and flooring ($2,685,500.00).

Chronicles, Volume One by Bob Dylan 2004
Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan tells his life story, reflecting on his Minnesota roots, his time in Greenwich Village, his family life, world events, and the ups and downs in his career.
Acolytes and scholars have long argued over the meaning of Dylan's often cryptic songs. Now they have a new source of unparalleled authority to guide their interpretations in the first installment of his long-awaited memoirs, which jumps around chronologically, much as Dylan has veered stylistically over the years.
Girl in Pieces is Kathleen Glasgow's debut novel.
Having suffered terrible losses, including the accidental death of her father, 17-year-old Charlotte adopts a tough demeanor and engages in self-destructive rituals to hide her deep pain before undertaking a poignant journey of healing.
