Annual Family Check In (AFC) - Mandatory for all students!
The Weld RE-4 School District uses our annual family check in to verify student information. Annual Family Check In (AFC) is a mandatory process that ALL parents will need to complete annually.
Note: we can not start building your child’s schedule for the year until this has been completed. Please complete your AFC as soon as possible!
Parents are now able to verify and update the following 2020-2021 school year information online:
Census & Household information
Emergency Contacts
Code of Conduct
Technology approval (6th grade)
Publication Consent
Immunizations (6th grade)

Parents may update AFC now by logging into the Portal and navigate to either of the highlighted areas pictured below.

Band Recommendations
We’ve received the go-ahead for band this year! With that said, there are some things that need to be required in order to mitigate the risks of aerosolization.
I’m basing these requirements on research that was done by CU and the NFHS and the University of Maryland. Here is a link to that research if you’re so inclined. https://www.nfhs.org/articles/unprecedented-international-coalition-led-by-performing-arts-organizations-to-commission-covid-19-study/
Wind instrument bells need to be masked. Here is a DIY video on the subject https://youtu.be/DoaarM_CHcU
Here’s another link which covers a wide range of masks for musicians and instruments you can make on your own. http://www.unitedsound.org/mask
Here’s a place to purchase instrument masks https://fjminc.com/pages/face-bell-covers
We may spend some in class time making bell covers as well.
The recommendations also include the use of fold-over masks for an additional level of protection. Those can be made with the instructions in this link http://www.unitedsound.org/mask I have yet to find a place to purchase a mask like this, but feel free to explore options. Normal masks can be used so long as they are replaced any time we don’t have the instruments on our faces.
Flute proved to be safer than thought in the study. Apparently, the moisture needs a vibrating surface to become an aerosol, and flutes create their sound in an entirely different way. However, I have seen flautists using drop-down face shields to contain their air and this device https://win-d-fender.com/ is also available.
Brass players need to have a Tupperware container for emptying their spit valves. The study recommends puppy pads, but some form of Lysol wipe will be more effective at disinfecting. If you wish to donate Lysol wipes to the band program, that would be awesome.
Percussionists need to keep track of their own equipment and not share anything without sanitizing it. I will be wiping shared instruments down (Bass drum, timpani) between uses and wipes will be available for mallets. Students should mark their own sticks with a sharpie since many of us will have the same brand and we don’t want to get confused.
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns. I am very excited to make music again!
