CAMPUS & PARTNERSHIP NEWS
State Testing
We are making some exciting changes to our SBAC testing week and keeping the best of our prior testing practices. We hope these changes make the testing experience easier and better for your students and you!
Who tests?
Smarter Balanced Assessments (ELA & Math): 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th & 10th grades.
Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science: 5th, 8th and 11 grades
The state measures the success of our school based on these tests. Every student who opts out, receives a 0 score. Too many 0’s would put us on the list of failing schools.
Workshops for test taking strategies and practice sessions will be held in the library in April.
Student’s will test on days they are typically on campus with a teacher they know or a sibling.
We have fabulous snacks for the students during testing and provide breaks when needed.
A fantastic After Party celebration for those who participate.
High school students can earn credit in English, 3rd year Math or Science with a passing score.
Most importantly, we are here to help and support in every way.
Words of Prey Magazine
Calling all creative members of the SVEC community! We are looking for writing and artwork for the winter issue of Words of Prey! There's no particular theme for this issue. Please email Jeanna Stroble with your submissions by Friday, March 25th.
Youth Video Contest Winner
Skyla Gunther, 11th grade, in our Video Production and Editing class, took first place in the Cascade Centennial Chapter of SAR and additionally took third place in the SAR State of Washington competition. She earned prize money totaling $300+. WOW!!
We are so proud of Skyla and her efforts to make this short film.

Spelling Bee
On Tuesday, February 13, twenty students, ages 6 years old through 13 years old, gathered in the library at 11a for our annual spelling bee. With each round, spelling words grew more difficult, from words like nest and grid in round 1 to paralysis and aspirin in round 10. Congratulations to James Cummings for correctly spelling sphagnum, and kudos also to runner-up Sonia Spiller, who correctly spelled inscrutable, among other words! Each speller was awarded a book of their choice, donated by Cat Tales through the Monroe Public School Foundation, along with delicious rice krispy treats provided by Kari Luna. Many thanks to all who encouraged students to participate and worked with them to help them prepare, as well as to all those who helped set up the library space before the bee and cleaned up after! The next level of spelling competition will be at 1p on Sunday, March 30. Details at https://townhallseattle.org/event/spelling-bee-2024/.
Talent Show
Our February 26th talent show was a blast! Thank you for all that preformed and attended. It was truly a great event. Visit our SVEC Facebook page for some amazing photos!
