Message from the Principal
Good Afternoon Dragon Family:
What a tremendous week! Purcell Homecoming week is a reminder of the great traditions that make small-town high schools a special place. Walking down main street with our parade participants and watching so many people line the streets to support their schools is a wonderful experience. Thank you to our parents, community members, business owners, and all who supported our school.
I would like to extend a special thanks to our parents this week. So many parents sacrifice their own personal time to volunteer their efforts to support our school. Whether it's rallying to get a softball field ready for play, hosting and helping with float building, helping organize the parade, working endless hours in a concession stand, etc., parents at PHS go above and beyond.
All of you deserve thanks and recognition for your efforts. And many of you help support in other ways that may not be as obvious. We appreciate and are thankful for all of your support. When I'm asked by friends and former colleagues what I like best about Purcell the first answer is always easy: We are blessed with great kids. My second answer is easy as well: Our parents are incredibly supportive of the school.
Proud to be a Dragon.
Jason

Parent-Teacher Conferences this Week: Monday & Thursday 3:30-7:00PM
Principal's Advisory Councils
Each year we will explore issues and review existing policies to improve our school and better support our students. I created advisory councils last year, both student and parents, to provide opportunities for both groups to contribute to this process. One area of focus this year is student mental and physical health and making sure students are getting enough rest.
This will be a topic of discussion with my upcoming Student and Parent Principal Advisory Council meetings. I meet monthly with my Student Advisory Council and quarterly with my Parent Advisory Council. We will explore possible policy changes this year to better support student mental and physical health. I've listed below the names of all individuals who serve on these councils and represent the views of both students and parents.

MAP Assessment Family Reports Sent out this Week
We are currently in the process of emailing Fall 2021 NWEA Map Tests for Reading and Math. Please read over these scores and contact your student's English or Math teacher with any questions. Our teachers are working with your student to better understand their scores and set goals for academic success. Please note only freshman and sophomores currently take the Map assessments. The spring data will be crucial to establish a baseline for winter assessments. You should expect to see growth in your students scores for Reading and Math.
Parent Teacher Conference days on October 4th or 7th are a great opportunity to bring your student and let them explain their goals and academic efforts. One thing your student might explain is their work on an individualized program called Exact Path. Exact Path is a tool available for use at home. Again, you can learn more about these efforts by contacting your student's English or Math teacher. We look forward to partnering with you in this effort.

Shout-out to our Wonderful Counselor!
Students who take the ACT earlier are more likely to score higher their junior year when all Oklahoma High School students take the ACT. They are also more likely to take more challenging courses and push themselves academically. This spring we will offer an onsite ACT prep class at a reduced price that all students will have an opportunity to attend preceding the Spring ACT date.
Also a reminder, that incoming Freshman students are our first class eligible for the Honors Curriculum Path that encourages students to take 4 years of Science and Math and allows for special recognition at graduation and on transcripts. I've attached below a reminder of our Honors Curriculum Path

Important Upcoming Info for Parents
If your student signed up for the ACT on Tuesday, 10/5, they should have brought home a paper for you to sign allowing them to fill out important information in their ACT account. Please look for that and help us get those back. Once we have that, they will have until Thursday, 10/7 to complete all non-testing information and choose 4 colleges to send their scores to for free. Future score reports will cost money, so this is a great opportunity! Additionally, your student will test Tuesday, 10/5 from 8:15-11:30. Please remind them to eat a good breakfast, bring sharpened number two pencils, and a calculator that is ACT approved. See link below for approved calculators. Thank you for your help!

Sophomore Parents: 10th graders will be touring Mid-America Technology Center on 10/28. At this time, they will have the opportunity to learn more about careers they may be interested in pursuing during and/or after high school and will be able to indicate whether or not they wish to apply for a program at MATC.
Junior parents: On Wednesday, 10/13, your junior will have the opportunity to take the PSAT. This exam is the only qualifying exam for National Merit Scholarships and is only available to take on this date. It is also a practice exam for the SAT, that can be used for college admission purposes. Additionally, this exam is great practice for the ACT or ASVAB. We encourage any juniors who are thinking about college or the military to be sure to participate in this free opportunity. Juniors will be given a choice to opt out of taking this so please have a conversation with your student if you want them to take it OR email Mrs. Feroli at ferolim@purcellps.org.
Senior parents: Kirk Rushing will be here 10/7 to complete FAFSA applications for college bound seniors for free. Slots are filling up. Please email ferolim@purcellps.org if you'd like to have an appointment. In order to complete the FAFSA, students and parents will need an FSA ID, which can be created by visiting the following website: https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in/landing. Applicants will also need a copy of their 2020 tax returns.
