Interested in knitting for a cause?
The “Little Hats, Big Hearts” project is helping raise awareness for babies born with congenital heart defects by knitting red baby hats to be distributed in local hospitals throughout the month of February. Our goal is to make a minimum of 15 hats to donate to participating hospitals. We need you to help us reach our goal! We are looking for donations of either knit baby hats, red yarn, 6 mm (US size 10) knitting needles, or even ziploc sandwich bags. As far as yarn is concerned, the American Heart Association asks that all yarn be red, either cotton or acrylic, and medium or heavy weight. An example would be Red Heart yarn. Any simple hat patterns are recommended. We currently have a group at the high school knitting hats for this project Fridays after school and your donations of red yarn and knitting needles would help us tremendously! A bin will be located in Mrs. Marinucci’s room 341 for all donations. If you wish to donate, all donations are due by February 16, 2018. All donations help! Thank you for your support!

I "get to" instead of "I have to"...
I thought it would be of value to take a moment now that half the academic year has passed to think about our perception of who we are, where we are, and what we are capable of doing. It is always important to reflect on your progress, but even then we often slip into negative self talk about what we have to do as students, friends, parents, teachers, and administrators. This coupled with a constant focus on how hard or problematic things are because of the barriers set before us each day, makes for a dangerous cycle of continuously complaining about our circumstances and falling short of our goals.
So how do we change our mindset from one of deserve and requirement to one of gratitude and opportunity? Start with one statement and two questions.
Change starts with how you perceive your world.
Do you believe you have to do things rather than believing you get to do things?
Do you believe there are too many problems or instead say "why can't I" and then act?
Begin to believe in this statement and ask yourself these questions. Reflect on your answers and if they are negative, find out how to change them by building a system of support and encouragement. Remember, change how you see and act in the world and your world will change!

guidance - Mrs. Whatley
Local scholarship applications are rolling into the guidance office. The list of available scholarships has been updated! They are also posted inside the guidance office. Have your senior stop in and see if they meet the criteria for application.
An electronic copy of your student's report card has been uploaded into the E-Locker in the portal under E-Portfolio. A hard copy of the semester 1 report card will be mailed home next week. Please review the progress for the first semester with your student. I hope they are proud of their results.
Any parent who has not yet activated their Parent Plusportal account can email Mrs. Whatley in the guidance office to have their activation and password information sent to them. This can be a very useful resource for helping to support your student academically.

warrior cries!
Warrior cries are shout outs to staff and students here at Seekonk High School. They are our way of recognizing hard work, creative thinking, and characteristics that make us proud to be part of this community. Please contact Dr. Jones if you wish to give a "warrior cry" to someone!
Both Advanced Placement Literature and Language Students for... "Reaching 100% attendance at this past Saturday's study session! The students were real troopers considering this ended up coming right in the middle of Mid-Terms due to the snow days. They did not complain and they really did appear to do their best and maintain positive attitudes about getting up so early and coming to school on a Saturday morning. We are very proud of them!" - Mrs. Hellmold and Mrs. Camara-Pomfret

The Opportunities Fair is designed to allow Juniors and Seniors to explore post-secondary options such as full-time jobs, part-time jobs, vocational training programs, internships, and volunteer work. The Fair will take place at Attleboro High School on Wed, Feb. 28 8:30 am to 10 am. A bus will be provided to and from Seekonk High School for the event. Anyone interested, please see Laura Calverley in Rm. 447 to pick up a Field Trip Request Form.

Seekonk High School Job Shadow Program
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
We welcome professionals from all fields to come forward; currently, however, we have three specific areas in which students would like to make contact. We are looking for a social worker and an engineer. If you or anyone you know works in one of those areas and are willing to help a student investigate career paths, please reach out to Mrs. Calverley, Career Specialist, at 508-336-7272, xt.62447.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.
Questions? Please contact Janet Fitzgerald, Transition Coordinator, 508-336-7272, ext. 62459

Seekonk’s Boys Basketball team (7-5) will host the undefeated and league leading Lakers of Apponequet High School on “Respect Night,” a night devoted to diversity, acceptance and understanding. Donations will be taken for the “Meeting Street School,” and spectators will be invited to “Take the Pledge” to focus on people’s abilities, not their disabilities. The Boys, led by balanced scoring from Ryan Riordan, James Jackson and Mitch Blanchard, are coming off a dramatic 60-58 victory over North Smithfield High School Thursday night and are continuing their drive toward post-season play.
Congratulations to Seekonk Senior Ryan Riordan who has been chosen as a member of this year’s Massachusetts South Football All Star squad and will participate in this year’s Massachusetts Shriner’s Football Game at Bentley College this Spring. Seekonk Head Football Coach Vernon Crawford will be on the South’s Coaching Staff and will serve as Offensive Coordinator.
Last Sunday while the New England Patriots were punching their ticket to the Super Bowl, Seekonk High School Indoor Track and Field athletes Cammy Garabian, Ashley Wyrostek and Kathleen Santos were busy setting a meet record in the shot put at the Division 5 State Relays up in Boston. Congratulations!
The Boys and Girls Indoor Track teams concluded their regular season schedules Monday night at New Bedford Voke. Hannah Bradbury and Julia Rickard helped deliver a 45-41 victory over Dighton-Rehoboth as well as a 60-26 decision over Case High School. Sophomore Abby Tenreiro won both the two-mile and the 1000, Junior Cammy Garabian won the shot put, and Senior Rachel Pion won the 45 hurdles in the tri-meet. Meanwhile the Boys team spit Monday night, downing Case 47-39 but falling to Dighton-Rehoboth 49-37. Running well for the Warriors were Andrew Cabral, Roth Santos, Henry Jordan, Jacob Klang, and Brandon Gomes. Both teams conclude regular season play as the Gold Division Champions of the South Coast Conference.
Spring Sports Registration is now open on line. Spring Sports offerings include Baseball, Softball, Boys and Girls Outdoor Track and Field, Boys and Girls Tennis and Unified Track and Field. All student-athletes who wish to compete must register and have a current physical on file with the Athletic Department. This registration will close on Friday, March 9th. No one will be permitted to sign up or register after that date and will be shut out of try outs which will begin Monday, March 19th.
Good luck to the Seekonk High School Girls Basketball team (4-9) who will be travelling to meet the SCC league leading Lady Lakers of Apponequet this evening. Tuesday night, the Lady Warriors dropped a tough home decision to the Lady Vikings of Wareham 54-47. Sophomore Mia DiBiase scored 20 points and remains one of the area’s leaders in scoring while Freshman Lauren Tortolani chipped in with 13 points.
