CDS Phoenix Rising
Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
December 6th, 2019
From The Assistant Director
CDS Community,
Mid-Year Exams are quickly approaching, and I am hopeful that students are taking care of their mental and physical wellbeing. While this is certainly a stressful time, it should not mean that we sacrifice our sleep. Contrary to popular belief the recent science tells us that students who sleep better prior to their exams perform better. New research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology also show a clear link between grades and sleep. Although exam week is generally quite challenging, through stress comes growth. It is my hope that our students rise to this challenge and emerge stronger than ever.
This week our art students completed the construction of a great new art installation outside of Dalton Hall. I hope that you will have the opportunity to see it when you come to our Winter Concert on Thursday at 7pm next week. Our basketball teams both returned from KKFS with victories on Wednesday. Coach Monette has been having such a great time coaching these two teams he plans to hold practices throughout the winter break! Finally, our Compassion Club also hosted their annual water balloon fundraising event. Students bought raffle tickets for the opportunity to throw water balloons at their teachers in freezing cold temperatures. Not only was it a great community-building event, but the group raised a total of 112,500 won for their sponsored children, Gary and Fiona. A huge shout out to Sally Kim and her club for putting on such a great event!
I'll finish this week’s piece with my favorite quote by Victor Frankl: "When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves." There will always be stressors in our lives. Some of them we can't control and some we can. For those we can't control, like the fact that exams start next week, we must alter our perspective, as that is something we can control.
Take a breath and try your best. This is all we can ever ask of you.
All the best,
Mr. Jason Musselman
Assistant High School Director

Dalton Rising Weekly Roundup
Junior Land Surveyors
"Precalculus students have been working with trigonometric functions and learning their graphs. Students have been learning how surveyors use measurements and angles to determine heights or distances. We have been learning how to use trigonometry and apply the work to real world problems.
Good luck on Midterms!"
-Math Teacher, Mr. Mark Adams
Moments from Volunteering in FP
"Our high school volunteers are visiting FP every Wednesday and Friday during SOT time to assist teachers, prepare for activities, and support in classrooms. Volunteers from G9-12 are devoted to bringing all their passion, energy and commitment to the young kids in FP. They learn, play, read, run, explore, laugh, and spend time together. As the faculty advisor of this club, I’m excited to share these highlights of our volunteers’ work ethics to everyone in the CDS community."
-Chinese Teacher, Ms. Karen Gong
"These hard work done by our club members helped to build the concept of 6C’s(Character, Curiosity, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Community), the part of Dalton Plan, in the FP community. I am proud of ourselves contributing our skills to bring a better learning experience to the kids."
-Erin Lee (Gr 11)
Learning Korean Play and Scenario
"Korean 10(11th grade) students studied 극 갈래(Genre: Play&Scenario) in term 2. Throughout the team project, students created short scenario and they were able to review what they have learned. They spent an enjoyable time, reconstructing the imagination into reality. Thanks to students who have shown a synergy effect, working together, this project was very impressive for me as a teacher."

Boys Basketball VS. KKFS
Last Wednesday, December 4th, the varsity boys basketball team travelled to KKFS for their first of two games this week. The boys are currently sitting at the number one spot in the KAIAC white division and were looking for another win to help maintain the position.
The game started off a little rough for our boys with KKFS getting a quick 6-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game. Then our boys relaxed and got to work by going on a 33 point run before letting the other team score a single point more. Our boys and their full court press defense was just too much for the KKFS team to handle and we ended up winning with a score of 61-26 while making our record a perfect 4-0 on the season.
Some notable players of the game were freshman Siyoon Kim who scored a team high 30 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, had 2 assists and 5 steals. Tylor Park also had a strong offensive game with 18 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 7 steals. Ricky Kim added 9 points of his own to go along with 2 rebounds and 4 steals. Although their point totals don’t always show how much they actually contributed to the win, but Woohyun Kim, Leo Hwang, Andrew Lee, Brian Kim and Woo Lee played amazing defense throughout the whole game, combined for 20 rebounds, 7 more of our steals, 2 blocks and 12 forced turnovers. Great game by all.
This Friday, we travel to DCS for our first match with them this season and the only team that we haven’t defeated yet.
Gooooo Phoenix!
Girls Basketball VS. KKFS
Last Wednesday, December 4th, the varsity girls travelled to KKFS for their 4th game of the season. KKFS was the very first team we played this year and the game was a nailbiter and CDS barely took the the win by 2 points. This game also was a nailbiter and came down to the last few minutes of the game to decide the victor.
The game started with the KKFS team getting off to a quick start with a 7-2 lead in the first few minutes. Our girls then rallied back to tie the game while beginning to play their tight aggressive defensive and didn’t allow the other team to score again until late in the 3rd quarter. CDS was leading 15-12 to start the 4th quarter and the score flip flopped back and forth going right into the final minutes of the game where our girls were able to maintain their 3 point lead to finish the game 21-18.
Our notable players of the game were Fiona Park who scored 8 points, had 1 rebound, 3 steals, played tenacious defense and forced the other team to turn the ball over at least 12 times. Yerin Park also contributed with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and Jueun Lee with 3 points, 1 rebound and 2 blocked shots. Overall, everyone on the team played great team defense and unselfish basketball which ultimately played a big factor in the win. Great job by everyone.
CDS travels to DCS for our next game tomorrow, where we face off with them for our first of two games this season.
Goooooo Phoenix!
NHS Student Of The Month - November
"Ameer has consistently displayed great character throughout his time at CDS and we would like to recognize him as student of the month for November. He can frequently be seen helping others, often going out of his way without being asked! In house he assists others with their homework, on the soccer field he can be heard for miles with his feedback, and in boxing club he is always the first to help clean up. It doesn’t matter if you are a teacher, admin, peer or staff member, Ameer will treat you with the same kindness. Never mind be like Jiin, be like Ameer!"
-Mrs. Rebecca Laders
Interview:
National Honor Society: How do you feel about being selected as the student of the month?

Ameer: I believe that I help students and people around me a lot, and if they need me, I will always be there for them no matter what.
NHS: What is your ultimate goal in CDS?
Ameer: First is to graduate, and second is to demonstrate good character, good personality and good image of myself.
NHS: How do you see yourself in 10 years?
