Falco Newsletter May 17th - 21st
2021 Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson MS
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Falcon Families!
I hope you were all able to enjoy the nice weather we’ve had lately! To all of our families who celebrated Eid last week, Eid Mubarak!
This week we will continue state testing with 8th grade students. If your student is testing, please don’t forget to have your student eat a good breakfast, bring their chromebook charged, and get a good night sleep before!
Please take time to complete the parent surveys being sent out. There are two surveys available to parents.
One is the annual parent survey. A message went out on the 16th with the link to this survey. If you didn’t receive it, please check your spam or junk folders before contacting the district for a new link.
The second survey is about grading. The survey linked here will allow you to offer feedback on whether the district should adopt a new policy about grading. Emails went out earlier this week regarding this survey. It needs to be completed by May 21st.
Thank you for continuing to support your student and the FOMS community in the home stretch of this wild year!

COVID 19 TESTING ON SITE
The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) supports COVID-19 testing in public and private K-12 schools in Oregon for students and staff who display symptoms of COVID-19. The Beaverton School District has registered to have Abbott BinaxNOW rapid antigen testing available for students and staff who develop primary symptoms of COVID-19 at school. Primary symptoms of Covid-19 include:
New or different than usual shortness of breath
New or different than usual coughing
Fever of 100.4 or higher
New loss of taste or smell.
The Abbott BinaxNOW test will only be administered to students who have consent from their parent(s) or legal guardian on file. The student must be capable and willing to perform a nasal swab test independently. The parent(s) or guardian can decline testing and opt to test their child with a healthcare provider. If there is any doubt as to whether a specimen may be safely self-collected by an individual, they should be referred to their healthcare provider for COVID-19 testing. Positive test results will be shared with the Local Public Health Authority to assist in contact tracing.
If you would like your child to participate in this testing program, please complete and return the consent form to the school office. For further information on the the Abbot BinaxNOW rapid antigen test see the following link: FDA information on BinaxNOW test

Words From FO/RC Library
ALL LIBRARY BOOKS DUE ON JUNE 4. LAST DAY TO CHECK OUT IS MAY 28.
The end of the school year means it’s time to make sure all the library books find their homes on their shelves. Books not turned in will be marked as “Lost” and a fine will be assessed. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!
If you have truly lost a library book; after looking in your students’ backpack, under the couch, in the trunk of your car, in the bathroom (ew.), etc… please let Mrs. Zomerman know ASAP. We can work out either a payment solution or find another way to replace the book.
Where do I return my Library books???
There are now 2 Library Book Return Bins at school: one in the front office foyer and the other in the back hallway past the fire doors. Students can also give books to any teacher and they will bring the books to Mrs. Zomerman.
Any questions can be directed to andee_zomerman@beaverton.k12.or.us

BEAVERTON SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAM
Dear Five Oaks Parents and Guardians,
It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of this program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient, and fun.
Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads.
The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be used to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.
The school’s survey will be open for responses until May 31.
We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.
Thank you,
Leah Biado-Luis
Beaverton Safe Routes to School Coordinator
