Class Learning Activities
Ms. Fleischer's Kindergarten Class
Kindergartener's in Miss Fleischer & Mrs. Mussara's class learned about the long i magic e this week. Students worked very hard at their centers and had a blast making their long i magic e fire places! This week, we celebrated Cinco De Mayo in both Social Studies and PGP. We learned all about the holiday and learned how the sombrero was made. We made our own sombreros and followed along on a directed drawing to draw a piñata! We look forward to another wonderful week of learning next week.
Ms. Schultes' 1st Grade Class
This week in ELA, our essential question was, how does the weather affect you? We read realistic fiction and non fiction texts about the weather. At the Guided Reading center we read stories about characters that were affected by the weather in the form or winter storms and rain storms. Students answered cause and effect questions and other related comprehension questions. Keep up the good work!
Ms. Vayda's 1st Grade Class
Math:
This week in math we continued working with repeated addition equations. Students also used what they know about groups of 10 to solve story problems. During math workshop, we practiced solving addition and subtraction equations by using place value task cards.
ELA:
This week our essential question was, "How can weather affect us?" We read "Rain School," "Rainy Weather," and "Wrapped in Ice" to practice our comprehension skill of the week: cause and effect. We learned to read and spell words with silent letters wr, kn, and gn. In grammar, students practiced identifying indefinite pronouns and reviewed compound words. We also worked on using commas in dates and letters. This week in Writers' Workshop, students wrote Mother's Day letters. Students also worked on making a craft for Mother's Day! They can't wait to bring them home for you!
Ms. Garcia's 2nd Grade Class
ELA: This week students learned about summarizing using text sequencing while reading biographies and legends, such as, "Brave Bessie", "The Legend of Kate Shelley", and "Cesar Chevaz". The phonics focus this week was words with the variant vowel /ü/ and /u̇/- oo
ou, u, u_e, ew, ue, ui. Students finished up their expository writing books about animals.
Math: This week students learned about comparison problems with the bigger amounts unknown.
Mini-PGP: This week we started learning about Europe and started to make our flap books after reading various articles and passages.
Ms. Johnson's 2nd Grade Class
ELA:
This week in ELA we focused on the essential question, "What do heroes do?". We practiced our summary skills and read biographies about real life heroes. In phonics we learned works with variant vowels with the /u/ sound. In writing workshop we finished up taking notes on our chosen animals for our All About Books. We started turning our notes into written chapters and will continue this process into next week.
Math:
In math workshop we finished up Unit 5! Students cruised through our unit on place value and addition. We had a lot of fun reviewing for our test playing a kahoot review game and took our test on Friday. Looking forward to starting Unit 6 next week!
Social Studies/ILP:
We studied our state this week! We learned that each state has unique physical and natural attractions. We talked about tourism and conservation and the goods and services a state can provide. In ILP we have been working on math skills like place value and addition. In Mini PGP students created books to study Europe! We will be researching Europe for the next few weeks and learning all about its countries, culture, geography, and more!
Our class had an awesome time celebrating our “Compliment Jar” being filled on Thursday. We had PJ day and had a great time having extra recess and a surprise visit from Ms. Fleisher’s class where we had a few siblings get to reunite!
Ms. Ayer's 2nd Grade Class
Literacy
This week, Ms. Ayers' class focused on discovering heroes in our everyday lives. We discussed heroes in our communities, as well as heroes that are personal to us. The class learned about and read biographies on Cesar Chavez, Bessie Coleman, Rudy Garcia-Tolson and Kate Shelley - all of which are influential in helping to inspire or support others. Using the information that they learned, the class practiced writing nonfiction summaries about the different texts using details and evidence from the biographies. We also worked on variant U sounds in which the class engaged in multiple phonics activities throughout the week to practice identifying, reading and using all of the patterns. In the pictures, you can see different partners working to sort words into variant U categories.
In addition, Ms. Ayers would love to thank all of you that donated to our class e-wallet for the Scholastic Book Fair! The kids enjoyed picking out many awesome books for our class library! They could NOT wait to begin reading IMMEDIATELY!
Math
During Math, the class continued to work on solving 2- to 3-digit equations in the form of story problems. Through our guiding curriculum, Ms. Ayers introduced different strategies each day, in which the kids learned to pick the strategy that will be both efficient and accurate when completing their work. It's important that they understand that all strategies don't work for every individual - everyone has to find and use the ones that yield efficient and accurate results for them! They also practiced using different math strategies as a way to double check their original answers. As always, they work on restating their answers using the words from the question as a part of their problem-solving steps.
Happy Mother's Day
Over the last two weeks, Ms. Ayers' friends have worked hard on their Mother's Day gift! Secretly, the students composed a heartfelt message sharing their appreciation for their mom as a Mother's Day gift. Besides keeping it a secret, the most challenging part was that they had to use their paragraph skills to write a 3-paragraph letter! From sharing their mom's talents, favorite memories, shared interests, things they would like to give her to express their adoration or simply reasons why they appreciate her, their letters came out SUPER SWEET! Get ready for a gift you'll never forget!
Ms. Hall's 3rd Grade Class
ELA: This week students worked incredibly hard to prepare for the NJSLA, which we will take next week! Students practiced reading passages, answering multiple choice questions, responding to short response questions utilizing text evidence to support their responses, and completed two out of the three writing tasks that students will have to do on the NJSLA. Students wrote a Literary Analysis Task, whose structure is extremely similar to the Research Analysis Task. Then, students wrote a Narrative Task. Students practiced quickly taking a few minutes to create an outline and plan their writing pieces before starting to type their essay. I am so proud of all their hard work! They are going to do amazing next week!
Math: Similar to ELA, this week students dedicated their time to practicing for the NJSLA. This week students reviewed topics that we have learned this year by completing review packets full of questions from previous NJSLA assessments. We reviewed the structure of the math NJSLA and what students should expect each day. Like ELA, there are 3 units (or days) of math. Therefore, we will complete Unit 1 on Thursday 5/12 and Unit 2 on Friday 5/13. Unit 3 will be done on Monday 5/16, then students will be done with the NJSLA.
Social Studies: As we welcomed May this week, students in Room 309 celebrated and honored Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Students explored the origin of the celebration, how Asian American/Pacific Islander immigrants contributed to American history. Students learned about various countries in Asia and the Pacific Islands, where many immigrants in the U.S. are from. Students also learned about Cinco de Mayo this week! Students read literature and non-fiction texts to explore the significance of the holiday to Mexican heritage, as well as the cultural traditions of the holiday.
Ms. Januse's 3rd Grade Class
After wrapping up our novel "Charlotte's Web", third graders worked to create Wilbur's Perfect Pig Pen. Students were given specifications that their Pig Pen must have and a limited amount of materials. Using teamwork, students created the Pig Pen and also solved for the area and perimeter of their structure.
Ms. Rodriguez's and Ms. Schulz's 4th Grade Classes
4th Grade Historians wrapped up the study of the American Revolution with a culminating project across both classrooms. Throughout the unit, students analyzed the process by which the American colonies united to gain independence from Britain and formed their government, compared key events, people, and ideals that contributed to the American Revolution and they examined some of the many important figures in early United States history. Students were assigned a Revolutionary battle or hero to research. Students completed slide show presentations and both classes got together to share. Students reviewed public speaking skills and focused on tone, posture, expression, pace, and eye contact. Presenters were confident and the audience was respectful.
Ms. Arciero's 3rd-4th Grade Class
t's been a great week in Ms. Arciero's class! In social studies, students have been working hard on finishing our unit on economics, learning about goods and services, wants and needs. We have been doing a lot of hands-on activities which teach us how a business is run and what kinds of goods and services they provide. We then moved on in social studies to celebrate the month of kindness. We planned out different tasks we want to complete in order to spread acts of kindness, and even created a Kindness Web to remind our classmates how much we care about each other.
In ELA , we have continued on in our information writing journey. This week we learned more about jellyfish, and worked through note taking organization. We continued to keep track of things we are still wondering about jellyfish, and things we have learned that we are shocked by! We also got to visit the book fair and made wish lists focused on books we want to read. We also started a new read aloud, The BFG. Students are listening during snack time and making movies in their heads, as Roald Dahl excels at writing with imagery and descriptive language.
Finally, in math we continued practicing for NJSLA and keep working through our math journals on fractions and equivalent fractions. Students have been working so hard, and I am so proud of them!
Ms. Romanowski's 5th Grade Class
ELA: This week our class continued preparing for the upcoming NJSLA assessment. Our focus was on reading and comprehending nonfiction texts. We also worked on writing responses to research simulation tasks. This involved using information from two different passages as well as a video on the same topic. This involved using information from two different passages as well as a video on the same topic. Students enjoyed learning and reading about the efforts of volunteers in South Africa as they worked to save the penguin population after a major oil spill in June of 2003.
Math: This week in Math Investigations, students continued to solve problems which asked them to multiply decimals by whole numbers and decimals by decimals. Students also learned strategies for dividing decimals.
ILP/Mini PGP: During ILP, students are practicing various math and language arts skills in order to review and prepare for the upcoming NJSLA assessment which they will take in a few weeks. During Mini PGP, students have been researching their selected country and taking notes as it relates to the topic. Soon students will begin drafting their position paper.
ILP with Ms. Barsukova
Mini PGP
~ Grade K: May 5th is Cinco De Mayo and Kindergarten was exploring and learning about the holiday. After learning facts about the festival through the videos and text, students created and decorated a paper Sombrero. Everyone worked diligently and excitedly to successfully complete the craft!
~ G1: May is Asian American Pacific Islander Month and 1st Graders explored and learned about the Japanese Children’s Day called Kodomo no hi which happens every year on May 5th in Japan. After “going on a flight and landing in Japan”, students learned how to count to 3 in Japanese, say Kodomo no hi and Koinobori in Japanese, and create the Carp Flag Streamer that people in Japan hang around to celebrate the holiday as well as the Golden week. Students enjoyed creating the carp by decorating it and putting it together so that it can be hung on the yarn to imitate the carp streamers that they do in Japan. Students did an amazing job learning about and creating the Koinobori!
~ G2: The next stop on the travel journey is Europe! Students are exploring the vast continent of Europe by going on Virtual trips to different corners of Europe . Ms. Barsukova shared stories, pictures, and experiences of her travels with her family to Europe with the students and they were so interested to learn more!
~ G3: Third Grade is continuing to create Google Slides to summarize and put together a presentation about their cargo transportation and Exploration LEGO journey with their team members. STEAM Tank Finalists are working on their prototypes for an invention. They use Google Doc to brainstorm ideas for the materials they can use to create a prototype, a list of the brand companies they can contact to help with their prototype, and we did some work on revising the finished versions of an email that each student wrote. We are planning to have a mentoring session on Friday with the STEAM Tank mentors to better prepare for the final presentations of the prototype.
~ G4: Students continue their online communication with Pen Pals by working on the project to share with the pals around the world for the World Explorer Unit. Students get to pick a topic of their choice based on the provided 7 options and be creative in their approach to the completion of the project. Students are using Google Docs to gather information, facts, and ideas for their project to successfully complete the task that will be shared with the Pen Pals platform.
~ G5: Fifth Grade is continuing their writing journey of the position paper for the Model UN. By using the template and the position paper written about Switzerland, students are slowly putting the pieces together to take first steps in organizing and developing their position papers. In addition, students are using Google Doc to put their notes together to keep their research organized and easy to access.
ILP
- Grades 3 to 5 have been working tirelessly and enthusiastically on refreshing the math skills to prepare for the upcoming NJSLA test.
- G1: Students worked on reading comprehension skills with a passagel called “The Sandcastle Mystery”. Meanwhile focusing on responding to questions in complete sentences by restating the questions to provide a solid response based on the text.
- GK: Students practiced the skill of restating the questions by putting the question into the answer and using the text to support the answer. By numbering the sentences in a passage, students were able to easily find the evidence in the text and say where they found that information. In addition, students solved math word problems by circling, underlining the given information and underlining the question to successfully create an equation, draw a picture and fill out the ten frames to express how they found the answer. Then, based on the solved problems and the checklist, they created their own and shared with the classmates that made the process very fun and enriched.
- G2: Students practiced the skill of reading comprehension and responding in complete sentences using the evidence from the text to support their answer. In addition, students scored themselves to monitor their progress. In addition, they used a story to identify the beginning, middle, and the end of the story.
Individualized Learning Pathway - Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
NJ Consortium for Gifted and Talented: Spring Nature Scavenger Hunt Challenge
Students in Grades 3-5 from Brandt, Connors, and Wallace TEAMED-UP and set out to explore Hoboken on a nature scavenger hunt challenge! They had to hunt for natural objects, plants, and creatures, while photographing their findings and logging information about the site where each item was located. Students enjoyed the view of the NYC skyline on the Hudson River Waterfront, they visited the statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus Park, and they walked through Elysian Park, where the first officially recorded baseball game in the US was played on June 19, 1846, and the "New York Nine" defeated the Knickerbockers, 23–1, in four innings. After tracking down all of the items on the checklist, the teams returned to Brandt school to collaborate on a group presentation of their findings. Students observed, recorded, and discussed skunk cabbage, reeds and sedges, onion grass, various early tree/shrub blossoms, nests, and much more!
Ms. Cofrancesco, Reading Specialist

First graders practiced “qu”. Second graders learned about the magic e. Lastly, third through fifth graders reviewed the third sound for /k/; which is -ck.
After word work, students in all groups read a guided reading story. Kindergarteners read the story titled, “The Tide Pool” and focused on using their fingers to point and master the sight words as they read. First graders and second graders drew their retells of their guided reading stories this week. Third through fifth graders finished their writing task from last week using RACES. Check out their great writing below!
On Thursday and Friday, all students worked on their grade level Mini PGP activity.
Mrs. White's Math Class
Integrating Science and Math
In Mrs. White’s class th students have been learning the concept of counting by groups or skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. The students gained a greater foundation of number sense. Once the students completed the section of the unit in their workbooks they created two projects integrating math and science. They were excited to learned how a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly, they eager for math class.
The students had fun making connections counting by 2’s and 5’s and making the connection of science and math relating concepts to real life. In class the students created two craft activity to incorporate the concepts learned. The students made caterpillars and used the concept of skip counted by 2’s to write the numbers on the body of the caterpillar. Next, the student’s colored butterflies, used the open space on the butterfly’s wings to skip count by 5’s, record their numbers and decorated the wings.
The Students were super excited to go on the Walk of Fame. The students went on a walk of fame to share what they learned with Ms. Addi, Principal, Mr. Sorafine, Vice Principal and with their peers. They clearly articulated what they learned and proudly skipped counted out loud and explained facts about the caterpillar morphing to a butterfly. I am so proud of my students they have been working extremely hard. Keep us the amazing work!!!!

Update: So many students flowers are starting to grow and we hope to be able to plant them in the Connors garden in the upcoming weeks!
Mr. Azzarto's Music Class
Hello Connors families, the week of May 2nd, some of our music students were identifying notes, which helped spell out words of a spring poem and others were learning about the Classical time period in music history.
In Ms. Johnson’s class the students identified notes on the treble clef on the front of the worksheet and then turned the page over to insert the correct letters that spelled out words which were part of a poem about spring. Once they finished spelling all the words in the poem, one of the students read the poem to the class, but that’s not where the lesson ended. I informed the students that poems can also be read musically. “What does that mean Mr. Azzarto?” I got on my Cajon drum and we read the poem using a rhythmic pattern. I asked “What type of music that you already know uses this style?” Most of the answers were rap music. “Yes you are correct, but many years ago poems were read with a rhythmic style by a group of poets called “beatniks”. So we learned a little bit about what a beatnik was and I showed them pictures of beatniks as we talked about what they did as movement within poetry. Here is Mya holding up her poem in front of a picture of beatniks and also a bobblehead of me as a beatnik! Snap those fingers instead of clapping after the poem has been read. Groovy!
In Ms. Romanowski’s class the students took a short quiz about the Classical time period in music. From Hayden to Mozart, they learned that the Classical time period represented simplification of the music that came before the Classical time period, which is the Baroque time period. No more complicated Fugues, fancy appoggiaturas, and harpsichords. They learned that Classical music is where the tune of the composition was the most important element of the piece and the orchestra got a lot bigger. Also, the conductor faced the audience, not the orchestra. Here is Jeremiah with his A+ test!
Art with Ms. Capalbo
This week in art our kindergarten and first grade classes learned about a value scale. We made a value scale for the colors orange and blue. We used this scale to paint our seascape’s sky!
