PARENTS NEEDED FOR OUR MONTHLY LUNCH TASTE TESTINGS!
Each month, Aramark, our lunch service provider, creates a new recipe for students to try using a locally grown fruit or vegetable. So far this year, students have enjoyed skillet stuffed peppers, apple chips, broccoli slaw, and butternut barley pilaf. Want to join in on the fun? Our next tastings will take place from 11:10 am - 12:35 pm on the following dates: 2/26, 4/1, and 4/29. Contact Mrs. Surmeian, surmeianj@psdri, if you'd like to help out.
READING WEEK IS COMING MARCH 2nd - MARCH 6th!
The Reading Week Committee is working hard to plan fun activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday and READ ACROSS AMERICA Week. We will have some special guest readers throughout the week as well! Be on the lookout for more information coming out soon!

Spring Fling Dance Party for K, 1 & 2 Students and Families
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students and their families are invited to attend the Spring Fling Dance Party being held here at the Winters Annex on Friday, March 13th, 2020. Winters' First STREAM Night ~ "Ride the Jet STREAM"
Save the date of Thursday, April 2nd, for Winters first STREAM Night. Don;t know what STREAM stands for? It's Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Please join us as we travel around the school and visit different stations to design, build, create, and explore STREAM activities. Slater Middle School's robotics team will be here to put on a demonstration, and one lucky student will will a new drone just for attending! More information to come closer to the date!

We Need Your Help To Improve Our Attendance!
Chronic Absenteeism refers to students who miss 10% or more of school. In this case, an absence is an absence, excused or unexcused. Mid-trimester attendance and tardy letters were just sent home with progress reports. As we approach the 100th day of school, students who have missed 10 or more days of school this year, are considered chronically absent. Currently, Winters chronic absentee rate is 17%. Our goal is to be below 15%. Please see the chart below. Absence and lost instruction time really add up. Together we can increase Winters' attendance rate!
Henry J. Winters Receives a $4,000 Feinstein Foundation Leadership Grant
Henry J. Winters was the recent recipient of a generous grant from Alan Shawn Feinstein and the Feinstein Foundation. As a Feinstein Leadership School, Winters was able to apply for the grant. Winters will use this award to purchase sensory materials and provide an African Arts in Education residency by Crocodile River Music.
Geometry in Grade 4
Mr. Gauthier, our fourth grade student teacher from Johnson & Wales University is geometry to his students. Here, they are learning about angles!
Science Experiment in Grade 5
5th graders from Mrs. Botelho's class worked together to separate mixtures during their science lesson.
A Gift From Our Florida Penpals
The students loved the leaves Mrs. Gendreau sent, and learning about Autumn. They decorated their room with the leaves. They sent a thank you note and letters from students telling us what they do in the Fall. Students also made beautiful leaf rubbings in art class.
Winters' 4th Grades Receive SPARK Grants For Gamm Theater Production
The Rhode Island Foundation believes "Students learn best when given real-life opportunities to engage in academic content in meaningful and relevant ways." "Spark Grants are small, flexible grants designed to give classroom teachers with innovative ideas the resources they need to “spark” a love of learning. Each fourth grade classroom will be working with educators from the Gamm Theatre to learn about how to perform for an audience. Students will be working on producing the play, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
U.S. Taekwondo Wraps Up Free Instruction for All 4th and 5th Graders!
All 4th and 5th graders have been working hard with Master Kim from U. S. Taekwwondo to learn self discipline, focus and skills during their PE classes each week. Fifth graders will graduate on Monday, February 3rd at 9 am, and 4th grade's graduation will take place the following Monday, February 10th, at the same time. Parents of 4th and 5th grade students are welcome to attend!
